MARCH

I know February is a short month, but how quickly has it flown by even with the extra day.

Welcome to the first month of Spring! For those of you that have ventured out in to your outdoor space, you may have seen a few old friends (I am talking about those seasonal flowers that pop up around now and not your next door neighbour) and the weather is changing.

If you haven't already done so, it's not too late to work on those borders. I have been busy removing weeds from borders, that I made winter ready last year, and digging in some good old organic manure. Have you planned on what you would like to see in them? Be mindful not to buy and plant any bedding plants, unless you have somewhere warm to keep them,

March is the time for pruning your roses both shrub and bush, and hard pruning should produce healthy growth and those beautiful flowers. Climbers are not pruned until the Autumn, now is the last chance to do them if you didn't.

Prepare to get the mower out of hibernation, has it been serviced? You may need to scarify your lawn and remove moss and dead grass. In a few weeks you can look at a good quality lawn feed but if your lawn has a history of producing the 'finest' dandelions and other weeds the best way to remove them is "one by one".

How are your Perennials? It does not matter how they look, these need cutting back to allow new growth.

You can see that we are getting towards your outdoor space becoming a part of your everyday life, happy days, it's not too late to start the planning and preparation.

If you need any assistance with your gardening needs / maintenance, please don't hesitate to call or drop me a line so that we can discuss your requirements - 07890 523579. Paul

FEBRUARY

Apologies for the late blog, for those of you that don’t know we moved house at the end of January and with one thing or another I didn’t get a chance to get it done. I have been busy with garden clearances and patio washing, I will have some before and after photos over the next few weeks.

The month of January is the time for post winter maintenance and so is February as the new season approaches. Life is starting to appear as the buds begin to swell. Here is a tip for you, the wildlife is very hungry and to stop them feeding on your bulbs and buds make sure there is plenty of food and water for them.

Those borders need that organic injection to promote healthy soil and planning what you would like to see in them. It's important not to walk on wet borders, you don't want to compress the soil and this month's forecast is not looking good if the rainfall and snow as predicted arrives.

This is the month for heavy pruning, training and fertilizers, and I always use organic because the nutrients are released slowly. Believe it or not but the lawns maybe ready for a their first cut of the year albeit not by much and those worm casts need sweeping away. Removing those unsightly lawn weeds and the best way is to remove them one by one by hand to get to the roots.

If I can help you with any of the above, or any other gardening needs please call me on 07890 523579.

Hi all, hope you’re all keeping warm in this cold spell. Pity we didn’t see this a few weeks ago for Christmas 🌨️🌨️🌨️.

Don’t know about your gardens, but there is some unseasonal growth happening in some parts of the country. The majority of the gardens that I maintain are ready for the new season and booked in advance to keep on top of it.

I am now taking new bookings to get gardens ready for the spring and I have a few openings available in my schedule if you are in need of my services.

Please don’t hesitate to call me on 07890 523579 or text me to discuss your requirements.

Kind regards, Paul PH Garden and Maintenance Services.

Happy New Year to you all.

JANUARY

You may look out into your garden and think there is not a lot happening and by spring and moving into the summer months your outdoor space will be full of colour and tranquility. Nature will do its thing, however, like everything a helping hand and some work will help. I have listed a few tasks I can do so we can get your garden in readiness for your enjoyment.

Winter digging, when the soil allows, fork in organic manure which will do wonders to improve extreme types of soil that will stop plants drowning or in free draining soil gasping for moisture.

Leaf collecting (mind the hedgehogs), leaving piles of leaves can potentially cause the spread of many pests and diseases by not removing them.

Now is the time for pruning, shaping shrubs & trees or move any plants that have overgrown their current home.

Please don’t forget our visiting wildlife, keep the fresh water and feeders topped up.

If I can help you with any of the above, or any other gardening needs (to free up your spare time) please call me on 07890 523579.

December

Well here we are, the final month of the year. Where has this year gone? The business has been going for a year now and it’s been a blast. The work has been tough but rewarding especially with the comments from happy clients, the garden transformations, the projects and seeing the end result.

Looking outside, the winter has arrived with a bang. Yes, that can put a stop on the jobs that still need your attention but these are the ones that will make life easier in the spring.

Before we move on to the basic maintenance of the garden we must look at looking after your company outside. The birds will need looking after with food and water, you don’t want them to look elsewhere and not come back.

Now back to the garden, the winter is all about keeping on top of the tasks that you have to do. Protecting the plants that are most vulnerable, use some straw or bracken for lagging. If you have planned to move a few plants then this is a great time to do it. Please note that you will need to take as much of the soil around the roots as possible. Wind rock is a problem this time of the year so do stake them. Winter digging is one of the hardest to do but an important one. Use some planks of wood so that you don’t tread on the ground.

The forecast is for snow so shake it off trees and shrubs, the weight can damage the branches. Don’t worry too much about snow on the ground as this can protect against the frost. Training and pruning your trees and shrubs (deciduous) without the leaves will help shape and look after the wellbeing of the plant. Taking away any deadwood and rubbing branches is the start of the process then stand back and picture it in your mind the shape you want. Take your time. Be mindful that the harder you trim the stronger the plant will come back, so the question is where is the plants position in your garden.

When the snow does clear, make sure that you keep on top of clearing any remaining leaves from the Autumn and keep an eye on any pests.

Quick question, have you insulated your outdoor taps? If you can isolate the water supply and turn it off even better.

In the words of many a park keeper “KEEP OF THE GRASS” Difficult if you have small children but yellow patches will appear when the grass thaws. Keep on top of taking the leaves away and spiking the lawn will help aeration.

As always, if you need some help or assistance with your gardening needs please don’t hesitate to call me on 07890 523579, email or text me. I have some availability over the next few weeks as many of my maintaining jobs have finished for the winter.

Keep warm out there 🥶🥶🥶

November.

The penultimate blog of the year, where has the year gone!!

Looking at the weather over the last few days and the forecast for next few days and weeks, you might want to stay inside your home and forget about the garden. However, there are still some jobs that will need your attention to get ahead of yourself for next year.

I have mentioned pests in previous posts and this is one that will not go away until we do get a cold snap. Good hygiene in the garden, sheds etc is paramount, even dirty stakes and tools are good places for them.

Leaf collecting is also very important, leaves on grass, around trees or paths need removing and ideally left to rot down for a great soil conditioner. If you don’t have a compost bin, pile them up and surround them with chicken wire or bag them up and put some holes in it.

Lawns should be kept off during wet weather, if you need to then use boards or planks. You may need to cut the lawns, only when it is dry, but only take the tops off with a light trim. This is probably the last chance you have for laying down new lawns.

If you have any fruit trees, this is a good time for pruning and training. The rule of thumb is to cut back about a third of the leaders. Any older branches that are rubbing of crossing need cutting.

Ornamental grasses like Bamboo need cutting back, but don’t let the thicker canes go away - dried out and perfect for supporting your plants next year.

So, plenty of tasks that need attention. The days are getting shorter and if you are in need of some assistance with your garden please don’t hesitate to contact me on 07890 523579 or drop me a message or email me at [email protected].

Happy gardening.

October.

Welcome to the tenth month of the year, this is when the autumn colours are starting to be in full effect. It’s also the start of the more physical side of the gardening year.

It’s all about preparation and planning for the following year in your outdoor space.

The leaves will be falling and these will need raking up from your lawns and cleared out from your borders. If left on the lawn they will kill off your grass and if left in the borders along with weeds they are great for the slugs and snails and will house the pests and encourage disease. If you have any space, the leaves will make a fabulous natural compost if left in a container of chicken wire staked out with four posts, it will take about 18 months but worth the wait.

Your spade will see plenty of use this month, the soil will need turning over and feeding with some organic compost. Be mindful of taking out any old root systems and any sign of grasses or anything that should not be there.

Hedge cutting season is with us and this is the last time to trim your conifers, be careful not to cut into old wood as they will not regrow.

Any climbers that you have need a good prune as this will prevent wind damage. Clear up any leaves but don’t compost them as they may contain disease. Perennials need cutting back after they have finished flowering and again be added to your compost bin.

Bulbs are usually planted this month in readiness for the spring, tulips can be planted up to December.

I mentioned that this month is a little more physical and some of your tasks will be to clean out your greenhouse and conservatories. Your work surfaces will need disinfectant to get rid of any pests that will live comfortably if allowed and give the glass a good polish to get the maximum amount of sunlight in for any plants that will be stored.

As always, if I can help you with any of these tasks please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Paul.

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to post a new job that I have been working on and completed. This job was booked in several weeks ago because I didn’t have the availability to do the work any sooner and I’m thankful for the clients patience. The task was to tidy up the lawn edging, remove the weeds and establish a new border to reduce the maintenance.

This is job that involves both front and rear gardens. As always, I do like to get the front done first (unless otherwise instructed). Borders needed a little bit of work and attention, the edges of the lawn needed to be straightened out a touch and the centre shrub needed a breather. Looking forward to starting the back garden soon.
