A careful rebuild with history in mind 🧱

This is one of two listed chimney stacks in the heart of Wi******er, being carefully rebuilt after leaks and water ingress.

With the scaffolding in place, we could get a much closer look at the condition of the stack before carefully dismantling it.

It’s being rebuilt to its original dimensions and appearance, keeping it in harmony with this beautiful historic property.

With over 40 years’ experience working on listed buildings, we understand the care, knowledge and attention to detail these projects require.

Because when it comes to historic buildings, preserving the character is just as important as making the repair.

Chimney Fire Safety Week - Our Top Tips 🔥

Not all wood is suitable for use in a wood burning stove or open fire. Burning the wrong materials can lead to excessive soot and tar build-up, increase the risk of chimney fires and even damage your appliance and flue.

Here's what not to burn:

❌ Wood pallets
They may have been treated with chemicals or contaminated during transport.

❌ Old furniture
Furniture often contains glues, varnishes and other materials that release harmful fumes when burned.

❌ Varnished or painted wood
Paints and finishes can produce toxic emissions and leave harmful deposits inside your flue.

❌ Treated timber
Preservatives used to protect timber are not designed to be burned and can damage your chimney while releasing harmful chemicals.

For the safest and most efficient fire, always burn clean, dry, seasoned or kiln-dried wood with a moisture content below 20%.

Have a question about chimney safety or preparing your fireplace for winter? Our experienced team is always happy to help.

Our team is what makes us...

Ashley is our Finance Manager and has now been with us for 6 years!

Ashley plays a key role behind the scenes, looking after the financial side of the buisness and making sure everything runs accurately and efficiently.

She’s an important link between the financial and operational sides of the business, helping to keep everything running smoothly day to day.

We might be known for chimneys, but it’s the people behind the scenes who help make Billings what it is.

What’s hiding at the top of your chimney? 👀

You might be surprised…

On a recent drone inspection in a busy city-centre courtyard, we were asked to check whether the chimney stacks and pots were suitable for use in a restaurant.

From the ground, everything looked fine. But from above? One entire stack had blocked chimney pots.

That’s the beauty of a drone inspection. Quick, safe and ideal for those hard to reach areas, giving us a clear view of your chimney without the need for costly access equipment.

At Billings Chimneys, we use drone inspections to spot issues that can’t be seen from the ground.

🏡 Recent Project Spotlight

We recently returned to a beautiful cottage in Devon for a repeat customer, carrying out a full chimney rebuild to help protect the property for years to come.

The rebuild included a new lead tray and weep holes to allow any water to drain correctly, along with the correct terminals and weather flaunching to provide a durable, weather-resistant finish.

We also sourced the correct red single bullnose bricks to carefully replace the existing brickwork, helping the rebuilt chimney remain in keeping with the character and appearance of this lovely cottage.

It’s always a pleasure to work with returning customers, and projects like this are a great example of how careful attention to detail can make all the difference when working on traditional properties.

When you've spent more than 40 years working on chimneys, you build a level of knowledge that only comes from years of hands-on experience.

At Billing Chimneys, we're proud to be sharing that knowledge every day.

John joined us in March as our Manager and has quickly become Tony's right-hand man. Having previously run his own landscaping business, John brought with him a strong understanding of the building trade and the day-to-day running of a small business. Since joining the team, he's been learning the specialist skills of chimney work directly from Tony, gaining invaluable experience across chimney repairs, rebuilds, inspections and heritage properties.

Tony continues to share the expertise he's built over four decades in the industry, particularly when it comes to listed buildings and historic properties. Through our consultancy service, he works with homeowners, architects and contractors, providing specialist advice on complex chimney projects and helping to ensure repairs are carried out sympathetically and to the highest standard.

It's been fantastic to see John embracing every opportunity to learn while bringing a fresh perspective and plenty of enthusiasm to the business. Together, they're helping Billing Chimneys continue to provide the honest advice and specialist knowledge we've become known for.

If you're looking for advice about your chimney, whether it's a modern home, a listed property or a heritage project, we'd love to help.

What you can see from your fireplace is only part of the picture. 🤔

Many chimney problems are hidden inside the flue, where they can't be spotted during a visual inspection. Cracks, damaged flue liners and blockages can all go unnoticed, even if everything appears to be working as it should.

That's why CCTV chimney inspections are such a valuable tool. Using specialist camera equipment, we're able to inspect the full length of the flue, giving us a clear understanding of its condition before recommending any repairs, flue lining or a new stove installation.

It's not about making assumptions. It's about giving you the information you need to make informed decisions, backed by honest advice from experienced chimney specialists.

Whether you're experiencing an issue, buying a property or planning a new installation, we're always happy to help.

Now is the perfect time to get prepared...
