Celebrating team milestones!

Congratulations to two members of the team who are celebrating their work anniversaries.

Luke Gittens, Co-Director, is celebrating an incredible 20 years with the business.

Aaron Morris, Architect, is celebrating 10 years with the team – technically 12 years since he joined, but with two of those years spent on a sabbatical travelling the world!

Two fantastic milestones and a brilliant reflection of the experience, commitment and contribution they both bring to the business.

A concept exploring how an existing orangery could be better integrated with a listed property through a carefully considered extension.

The proposal creates a stronger connection between the existing house and orangery, introducing additional space while responding sensitively to the character of the historic building.

The design considers how scale, proportion, materials and natural light can work together to create a contemporary addition that sits comfortably alongside the existing architecture.

Just a concept at this stage, but an interesting example of how thoughtful design can help historic properties evolve to meet modern needs.

What happens when there’s no room to simply keep adding on?

You rethink the design.

For this previously extended cottage, the challenge was to create more from an existing structure while working within Green Belt constraints.

The solution involved some clever moves:

▪️ A new pitched roof created a generous master suite
▪️ The existing dormer was reimagined as a striking entrance gable
▪️ Internal floor space was carefully redistributed
▪️ The front door was relocated to improve the approach
▪️ A new staircase became a natural focal point within the home
▪️ Glazing and traditional materials were combined to complement the rural setting

The result is a home that feels completely reimagined — without simply relying on adding more floor space.

From agricultural building to contemporary home.

A design that changed along the way.

This stunning contemporary home started with a very different brief.

Our clients had purchased a 1970s bungalow on a large corner plot and having previously secured planning consent for a substantial replacement dwelling on the site, bi Design were initially asked to adapt the existing design and reduce its scale.

Although our clients still loved the original proposal, they felt it was someone else’s design. They wanted the opportunity to create something completely unique to them.

The new brief took inspiration from the work of Olson Kundig, known for bold, contemporary architecture with a strong industrial influence but with a design that would feel right at home in South Derbyshire.

Copper cladding, sandstone and aluminium bring together contemporary and traditional materials, while the internal steel frame allowed the layout to be shaped around the way the family wanted to live.

It was one of the most challenging briefs bi Design had worked on, but also an opportunity to create something genuinely individual.
