Certain tree species, such as bald cypress, can tolerate having their roots and even parts of their trunks underwater for long periods. They’ve developed special adaptations that allow them to cope with low-oxygen conditions around their roots.

Even more amazing, bald cypress trees can grow distinctive “knees” from their roots above the soil or water — although scientists are still debating exactly what these structures are for!
