I’m showing how I, a proffessional woodturner works, not the best methods for the less experienced

Kiln‑dry timber, slow‑motion, then real speed and a cracking camera angle — perfect for showing proper control and clean tool presentation. The cut is silky, the shavings are long, and the satisfaction is still the same after 47 years practice 😁I know I’ve shown this cut plenty of times, but when something feels this good, you don’t stop sharing it. Some things never get old.

Back at the lathe today after a cracking family holiday — loads to catch up on, as always.Had this video sent over from a visitor to the workshop. He asked for a quick photo… which somehow turned into a full‑blown video.Yes, the lathe looks a right state. I was in a rush before heading off on holiday, so don’t judge me too harshly 😁Most of you know I don’t do demos, and I never work when visitors are in the shop. But this chap has been incredibly generous over the years, so he’s one of the very few who’s ever seen me turning live.I’ll try to get a few more videos up soon, but you know how it is — after a holiday, time’s at a premium. So things might be a bit sparse for a while.

204,000+ followers… it still floors me. And with that many people here and many fans, I feel I should share this picture again — because without this man, none of this would exist. My Grandad, Alfred was the best woodturner I’ve ever seen — he was the man who shaped my entire woodturning life. He taught me the craft, the patience, the pride, and the joy of turning. He gave me a proper production woodturners apprenticeship, then years of working side‑by‑side… but what meant the most was that he was my best friend. It’s been almost 34 years since he passed, and I still miss him every single day. There are moments at the lathe where I swear I can feel him beside me — in the rhythm, in the standards he drilled into me, in the way I steady my hands. Some people leave memories. He left a heartbeat in the work. If I could have one more day with anyone, it would be a hard choice between him and my parents. What I would give for just one more day turning shoulder‑to‑shoulder, sharing the quiet, the laughter (he had a great sense of humour), the sawdust, the life we loved. I don’t have many photos of Grandad, but this one is exactly how he lives in my mind — cow gown, cap, and covered in wood dust. That’s the man who made me the turner I am. And every follower, every comment, every bit of support keeps his legacy spinning on the lathe with me.

3” Oak bobbin legs today — standard production work. This shows the muscle memory and clean technique needed to get each bobbin right in one pass per side. Real speed throughout, with a bit of slow‑mo added because a few of you asked for it. Also a couple of angles.
I’m out of the workshop next week, so enjoy the peace and quiet while I’m gone. See you all after a slow one.

These Scandinavian Redwood finials are a proper fun job — one of my favourite types of work. Easy, satisfying, and they cut beautifully.
The slicing cut at the bottom of the onion shows exactly why I like using the wings of the spindle gouge: efficient cut, crisp detail, and a finish straight off the tool that barely needs sanding.
Not a tutorial — just me showing my methods. They’re not necessarily the best for new turners, but they’ve proved themselves to work for me over a few decades at the lathe.
Take all safety precautions and work within your own abilities. The wood doesn’t care how confident you feel — it only reacts to what you actually do.

Interesting little pommel on a very busy newel for you today — plenty going on in this one.If you’ve got any questions, fire away. Replies might be a bit slow as the next few days are absolutely manic, but I’ll get to them. And thanks again for all the support — the likes, comments, and shares genuinely help more people see the videos. Much appreciated.

A quick one today. Egg shapes are some of the best skew practice and fun.

A couple more of these Oak pinch pots requested, so here is how I make them — all shown in real speed. These tiny bowls are cracking little projects: fun to make, quick to turn, and brilliant learning pieces if you’re new to bowl work.
My methods come from 48 years of production turning, so they’re efficient but not always ideal for beginners. Use whatever approach suits your skill level, take proper PPE precautions, and never attempt anything you’re not comfortable with. You — and only you — are responsible for your own safety.

Sound on for the commentary — you’ll hear exactly what’s going through my head as I work.
You may of seen me do this before but does it surprise you how accurately it turned out? Just one pine post cap to make, customer supplied the drawing and template, and I figured you might like a look at what skills production turning brings to the table. I’m lucky to have a decent eye and I gauge when I need to, some shapes I can just eyeball straight off. ( I’ve done enough of them) This one had me thinking “A new challenge!” — and no, this was my only attempt and I don’t always land them this close on the first go. Enjoy the clip, enjoy the shavings, and have a cracking weekend.

A mate asked if I could show him how to make a whistle that sounds like a cuckoo. Now, I’ve made very few whistles in my life, so this one is my first attempt at a cuckoo impersonator 🙈
Thought you might like to see how I did it. With a bit of experimenting on the hole sizes, you can tweak the sound — but that’s his job. I’m not auditioning for Springwatch 😉.Not really a tutorial, just an idea for anyone who fancies a go.
And as always: take proper safety precautions and don’t attempt anything you’re not comfortable with. No one wants to explain to A&E that they injured themselves making a cuckoo whistle. 😂 original video was 4 1/2 mins so it’s sped up by a very small amount to make it a little more watchable
