What’s coming out of your boiler flue?

F-Gas – why does it matter?

Many heat pumps and air conditioning systems use refrigerants to move heat from one place to another. Where those refrigerants are fluorinated gases, they need to be handled correctly because releasing them into the atmosphere can contribute significantly to global warming.

That’s where F-Gas qualifications come in.
Engineers working on regulated F-Gas systems must have the appropriate training and certification to install, service, repair, recover refrigerant and carry out work on the refrigerant circuit safely and responsibly.

Heating oil prices rising? Worried about supply?

The Government has now increased the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant to £9,000 for eligible off-gas-grid homes replacing an oil heating system with a heat pump.

That’s an extra £1,500 towards the cost of making the switch.

Keeping a boiler flue clear in autumn matters because leaves, moss, cobwebs and other debris can build up around the terminal just as heating use starts increasing.

The main reasons are:

🍂 Safe removal of combustion gases – the flue is designed to carry combustion products safely outside. Obstruction can interfere with that process.
🍂 Correct boiler operation – modern boilers rely on the flue system working as designed. A restriction can affect combustion and may cause the boiler to shut down or fault.
🍂 Reduce carbon monoxide risk – a blocked or damaged flue can contribute to unsafe combustion conditions, which is why flues should remain unobstructed.

💧 Responsible for a school, community building or commercial premises? 💧

Prestantia carries out regular Legionella water monitoring at schools and other commercial premises, helping those responsible for their buildings manage their water hygiene obligations.

Legionella bacteria can multiply in water systems, particularly where water becomes stagnant or temperatures fall within the range that encourages bacterial growth. If contaminated water droplets are inhaled, they can cause Legionnaires' disease – a potentially serious form of pneumonia.

For schools and other non-domestic premises, managing this risk isn't simply good practice. Those responsible for the premises have legal health and safety duties to assess and control the risk of exposure to Legionella.
