DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR SECURITY DOG HANDLER IS ACTUALLY DOING DURING THE SHIFT?

A professional dog handler should be doing more than arriving on site, parking up and waiting until the end of the shift.

Regular patrols, checks of vulnerable areas, accurate reporting, appropriate escalation and a visible security presence should all form part of the service.

If you are unhappy with your current security provider, or you are constantly questioning whether the service you are paying for is actually being delivered, it may be worth reviewing your options.

Colosseum K9 provides professional security dog handler services for commercial sites across the UK.

SHE KNOWS THIS ROUTE… SO WHAT DID SHE SMELL?

This is Eve on one of our regular patrol routes.

She knows the site. She knows the route. She has walked it many times before.

But something was different.

Without being given a command to search a particular area, Eve picked up a scent that caught her attention and her behaviour immediately changed.

The handler might not be able to see anything unusual, but the dog is constantly processing scent information from the environment.

And that is where a trained security dog can add another dimension to a patrol.

Wind, temperature, moisture, surfaces and the layout of a site can all influence how scent travels and how a dog detects it.

Want to know just how powerful a dog’s sense of smell really is?

HIGH VISIBILITY SHOULD NOT MEAN HIGH PREDICTABILITY

A visible security presence can act as a deterrent, but patrols become easier to anticipate when they follow the same route at the same time.

That is why our security dog patrols combine a strong, visible presence with irregular patrol patterns.

Handlers remain clearly identifiable while patrol timings and routes are varied where operationally appropriate, with additional attention given to vulnerable areas and changing site conditions.

The message is simple:

You should be able to see that security is present.

You should not be able to predict exactly when the next patrol will appear.

This footage shows one of our night-time security dog patrols in operation.

3:45AM. FOUR PEOPLE REPORTEDLY TRYING TO ENTER A HULL BUSINESS.

In the early hours of 13 July, Humberside Police were called to a burglary in progress at commercial premises on Mount Pleasant, Hull.

Four people reportedly attempted to gain entry before climbing onto the roof. Three teenagers were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary.

For businesses, construction sites, yards and vacant premises, incidents like this highlight the vulnerability of commercial property after hours.

CCTV can provide valuable evidence. Alarms can raise an alert. But a professional security dog handler provides something different: an active and highly visible security presence physically patrolling the site.

For higher-risk premises, that additional layer of deterrence can matter.

Protect the site before the incident becomes the evidence.

Colosseum K9 provides professional Security Dog Handler Services across Hull and surrounding areas.

A STOLEN LOAD IS ONLY PART OF THE COST

West Yorkshire Police have reported six arrests in Leeds as part of an investigation into organised cargo theft from HGVs.

Police say organised HGV cargo theft is averaging around nine offences a day nationally, with a reported cost of £65 million last year.

For a logistics operation, the loss can go well beyond the goods taken. Vehicle damage, replacement transport, missed deliveries and disruption can all follow.

For yards holding loaded trailers or vehicles overnight, it is worth asking what actually happens on site once normal operations finish.

A Security Dog Handler provides an active, visible presence able to patrol yards, access points and perimeter areas.

If your site has out-of-hours exposure, call 0800 009 6420 or request a free, no-obligation quote.

WHAT DO THE LATEST LEEDS CRIME FIGURES ACTUALLY SHOW?

On the surface, the answer looks fairly simple.

Leeds recorded 108,547 crime and anti-social behaviour incidents in 2025, down 2.6% from the year before.

But look at the individual categories and it becomes more interesting.

Some of the biggest property-related categories fell significantly. At the same time, six categories increased, including anti-social behaviour and robbery.

So the overall total only tells part of the story.

We’ve broken down the full 2024 and 2025 figures, the biggest changes and how recorded incidents moved throughout the year.

“NOTHING TO REPORT” SHOULDN’T MEAN NOTHING TO SHOW

A quiet shift is usually exactly what we want.

No incidents. No damage. No unauthorised access.

But that does not mean there should be nothing to show for the hours spent protecting the site.

Patrol records, timestamped photos, observations and checks of agreed priority areas all help demonstrate that the site was actively covered.

The photo here is a simple example from one of our patrols.

“Nothing happened” can be a good result.

“Nothing was recorded” is something completely different.

RANDOM PATROLS SHOULD NOT MEAN RANDOM THINKING

Random patrols can help reduce predictability. But random should never mean aimless.

On an exposed site, there still needs to be clear thinking behind every patrol.

Gate areas, perimeter weak points, blind spots, stored plant, fuel points and temporary access routes should remain priorities, even when patrol times and routes vary.

A professional Security Dog Handler patrol is not simply someone walking around the site. It should be carried out with site awareness, clear priorities and proper reporting.

The question is simple:

Are your patrols unpredictable to outsiders - or simply unstructured?
