RECORDS AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Would you know which security dog and handler were working on your site if an incident happened?

Professional security is not just about having a trained dog and handler. It is also about maintaining records that demonstrate their suitability for the job.

BS 8517-1 covers documentation such as:

• Dog identification and veterinary fitness
• Training and assessment records
• Incident reports and complaints
• Dog and handler assignment records

The standard also recommends keeping these records for specified periods, including at least three years for assignment records.

Why does this matter?

Because if an incident occurs, proper documentation can help establish who was deployed and support the investigation of what happened.

Before choosing a security dog provider, ask whether they can provide evidence of their teams' training and suitability.

𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗠𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚: 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗩𝗦 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱

Recorded crime in Reading decreased across all three categories analysed.

The figures show:

• Burglary fell 5.9%
• Other Theft fell 10.9%
• Vehicle Crime fell 7.8%

Combined, these categories fell from 3,553 recorded offences in 2024 to 3,236 in 2025.

That represents 317 fewer offences, a reduction of 8.9%.

EQUIPMENT, CLOTHING AND CONTROL

Suitable equipment helps a security dog handler work safely and maintain effective control.

BS 8517-1 covers equipment, clothing and identification, alongside the operational arrangements needed to protect the handler, the dog and other people.

But having the equipment is only the beginning.

Dog and handler teams should have:

• Suitable leads, collars and other dog equipment
• A suitable muzzle available when needed
• Appropriate uniform, protective equipment and identification
• Human and canine first aid kits and a fire extinguisher readily available at the assignment

The handler should check and maintain the dog’s equipment, keeping the necessary records. Damaged equipment should be taken out of use.

During operational duties, the dog should remain on a safe lead, with a safe distance maintained from other people.

So when choosing a security dog provider, don’t just ask:

“Does the handler have the right equipment?”

Ask:

“How is the equipment checked, and how will the handler maintain safe control on our site?”

Providing equipment is one part of preparing a team for work. Regular checks and correct use help keep that team safe and effective throughout the assignment.

CRIME IN ROTHERHAM: 2024 VS 2025

Crime figures in Rotherham changed noticeably during 2025.

Across the four main categories we analysed:

• Burglary fell 23.8%
• Other Theft fell 12.7%
• Vehicle Crime fell 9.4%
• Criminal Damage & Arson fell 10.0%

Combined, these categories fell from 7,447 offences in 2024 to 6,457 in 2025.

But there is another side to the figures.

Shoplifting increased by 17.5%, reaching 2,211 recorded offences in 2025.

TRAINING AND HANDLER COMPETENCE

Having a certificate does not mean the training stops.

BS 8517-1 recommends a minimum of 50 hours of handler training, covering things such as dog control, patrols, searching, legislation, dog welfare and dealing with incidents.

Dog and handler teams should then continue with:

• Monthly training
• Quarterly assessments
• Annual certification

If a serious safety issue is found during an assessment, the dog or handler should be removed from operational duties until the problem has been corrected and reassessed.

So if you are hiring a security dog company, don’t just ask whether the handler is qualified.

Ask how often the team trains and how their competence is checked.
