🦔🏡 HEDGEHOG MANOR – OFFICIALLY OPEN FOR BUSINESS! 🏡🦔

A couple of months ago, our neighbour’s dog sadly killed a mother hedgehog, leaving four tiny orphaned hoglets behind. We took them in, weighing just 120–130g each, with the hope of giving them a fighting chance.

What followed was weeks of feeding, cleaning, weighing, removing ticks, and dealing with some surprisingly determined little escape artists! 😂

There were midnight adventures, disappearing hedgehogs and plenty of wondering how on earth something so tiny could cause so much chaos!

But they grew, and grew, and before long our little prickly lodgers were ready for the next stage of their adventure.

Naturally, being DIY Kitten, we couldn’t just give them any old accommodation…

So Hedgehog Manor was born! 🏡

A purpose-built, insulated hedgehog house, complete with separate sleeping quarters, entrance tunnels and a secure outdoor enclosure where they could get used to life outside before returning to the wild.

And today is the big day! 🥹

After weeks of rehabilitation and a period of settling into their outdoor home, our four little rescues are officially being released back into the wild! 🦔🦔🦔🦔

It’s a bittersweet moment. We’ve watched them go from tiny, vulnerable babies to healthy, independent little hedgehogs, and now it’s time for them to do what hedgehogs do best.

The doors of Hedgehog Manor will remain open, and we’re secretly hoping at least one of them decides that the accommodation, food and service are worthy of a permanent five-star review! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

No rent required. Just the occasional appearance on the wildlife camera would be lovely! 😂❤️

Every now and then I actually get around to doing a job at my own house! 😂🐾

We needed somewhere decent to keep the logs dry for the log burner so built this rather substantial log store from scratch.

Slatted sides and base for plenty of airflow, and a felted sloping roof to keep the worst of the weather off.

Now to fill it with logs! 🪵

A recent bathroom job for DIY Kitten 🐾

The existing tiles around the bath had seen better days, but there was no need to rip the whole bathroom out.

I fitted large-format marble-effect wall panels around the bath, taking them right down past the sides for a much neater finish. The existing bath panel was then altered to fit the new narrower opening, before refitting the shower and curtain and putting everything back together.

A much smarter, more modern bathroom without the cost and disruption of a full refit 🙌

Quite a difference from where we started!

And yes… I really do need to get better at remembering to take photos of my jobs 😂

A little before & after from last week… 🐾

This door, step and frame had definitely seen better days and was looking very tired and marked.

A good bit of prep, a fresh new colour and some TLC later… what a difference!!

Today’s little transformation 🐾

A pair of solid pine bedside cabinets that had definitely seen better days!

Years of old varnish, marks and general wear stripped right back to reveal that gorgeous natural grain, then refinished to bring the warmth of the wood back out again. Even the original wooden k***s scrubbed up beautifully.

I absolutely love jobs like this - taking something tired and giving it a whole new lease of life rather than replacing it. ❤️

Confession time... I don't actually enjoy wallpapering!

But just because I don't love doing it doesn't mean I don't take pride in it. Every seam matched, every edge neat, and two feature walls finished for the same customer.

I might grumble while I'm doing it... but I have to say, I'm actually pretty good at it! 😄

Well… this wasn’t quite the quick job I expected yesterday! 😅

The customer had a slightly spongy floor under their laminate, so the plan was simply to add a batten for some extra support.

Or so I thought…

Once I lifted the laminate, I found the floorboards underneath were soft too. That meant only one thing… time to investigate.

After lifting a few boards, I discovered the end of one of the floor joists had completely disintegrated. It had rotted away over many years (possibly with some help from old woodworm too), leaving the end of the floor with virtually nothing supporting it.

In this extension, the joists had originally just been laid across the breeze blocks rather than being fixed into anything, so once the end failed, the floor simply started to sag.

So the job became a little bigger!

✅ Cut the floorboards back to the next sound joist.
✅ Removed all the rotten timber.
✅ Installed a new treated timber joist.
✅ Mechanically fixed it securely to the wall as well as supporting the floor.
✅ Re-laid and screwed all the floorboards down.
✅ Re-fitted the laminate flooring.

The end result is a solid floor again, with no movement underfoot. 💪

And finally… a little bit of history!

Hidden underneath the floor was an old Kwik Save carrier bag. Kwik Save went into administration in July 2007, which means that bag has been trapped under those floorboards for at least 19 years! It’s a funny little time capsule that also gives a rough idea of how long that timber has probably been quietly deteriorating.

Hopefully the repair I’ve carried out will now see that floor good for another couple of decades. 😊

It’s amazing what you uncover when you start peeling things back… no two jobs are ever the same!
