What a weekend! ❤️

The beads I came home with are a wonderful reminder of the conversations, new connections and shared love of turning that made the AWGB Festival so special — and winning the Simon Hope tool set in the raffle was a pretty fabulous bonus!

A huge thank you to all the demonstrators who shared their knowledge, everyone who came along and joined in, and the many volunteers who gave their time to make the weekend happen.

Turned Connections isn’t ending here either. I’ll be taking my beads with me to future AWGB events and when I visit clubs to demonstrate — so if you see me wearing them, bring a bead and come and swap!

What a great weekend!!!

The real highlights of the AWGB Festival for me was having the chance to watch and learn from some exceptional turners.

Three demonstrations particularly stayed with me, for very different reasons.

Pascal Oudet from France — his curiosity and fearlessness. He seems completely unafraid to experiment, push a technique and find out where its limits are. Accepting breakages as part of the process was a very liberating idea.

Phil Irons from the UK — the thought and attention to detail he gives to every aspect of a piece. Nothing feels accidental; every decision is considered.

Ronald Kanne from the Netherlands — his playfulness and wonderfully practical approach. There was a real sense of enjoying the process, experimenting and finding solutions as he worked.

What struck me about all three was the knowledge sitting underneath their turning.

Each has a deep understanding of wood and how it behaves, alongside an intimate knowledge of their tools.
They don’t simply use tools as they’re supplied—they understand them well enough to adapt and refine them to get exactly the performance they want.

I came away with plenty of notes, ideas I want to try in my own workshop and even a chunk of wet flame beech (massive thanks for your generosity Phil).
And, perhaps most importantly, a reminder that however long you’ve been turning, there’s always more to learn.

This October half term, we’re making magic wands — from real wood.

Children start by choosing the branch they want to work with and thinking about their own wand design. Then we’ll head to the lathe to shape it before adding the finishing touches.

They can keep the natural beauty of the wood, add colour with wood stains, or decorate their wand with pyrography.

No plastic replicas here — just a completely unique wooden wand, designed and made by its owner.

Perfect for young Harry Potter fans and budding makers aged 9+, accompanied by a parent.

Make a few beads, bring them to the AWGB Festival in Stratford, and join the Turned Connections bead exchange!

Wear your beads on your lanyard, a cord or a wristband so fellow woodturners know you’re taking part. Then swap them with other turners you meet throughout the festival.

They don’t need to be perfect or complicated—just make a few from your favourite scraps and bring them along.

Everyone’s welcome! If you see me wearing mine, come and say hello—and swap me a bead!
