Before you kick through that lovely pile of autumn leaves…

Have a little think about who might already be living underneath it!

Leaf piles, overgrown vegetation, stacked timber and garden clutter can provide shelter for all sorts of wildlife, and potentially unwanted pests too. We're certainly not suggesting everyone needs a completely spotless garden. Wildlife needs somewhere to live too. But around your house, sheds, garages and commercial buildings, keeping vegetation and debris under control makes it much easier to spot activity and removes potential harbourage close to the property.

So, enjoy those crunchy autumn leaves… Just maybe don't investigate the suspicious-looking pile with your hands!

Would you know you had a rodent before you saw one?

Quite often, seeing the rodent isn't the first sign.

Keep an eye (and ear!) out for:
Small droppings, particularly around cupboards and food areas
Scratching or movement, especially at night
Gnaw marks on packaging, wood or cables
Shredded paper, fabric or other nesting material
An unusual stale smell
Signs of activity around hidden edges and undisturbed areas
Rodents are very good at staying out of sight, which means a problem can be developing before you ever spot one running across the floor.

As we move further into autumn and temperatures fall, it's a good time to start paying attention to those little clues.

Sometimes the evidence tells us far more than the actual sighting.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day.

Running a business can be brilliant, rewarding and exciting.
It can also be exhausting.
There are customers to look after, staff to support, paperwork, training, compliance, networking, finances and all the unexpected things that land in your lap when you're self-employed. And sometimes you can become so busy looking after everything and everyone else that you forget to check in with yourself.

So, this weekend, we're reminding ourselves to:
Take the break.
Go for the walk.
Have the coffee.
Talk to someone.
Laugh at something ridiculous.
Switch off for a while.
And check in on the people around you; sometimes a simple "How are you really?" can mean more than you realise.

Mental health matters every day, not just on World Mental Health Day.

Why does it suddenly feel like everything is trying to come indoors?!

Autumn arrives, and suddenly we're noticing spiders, flies and other little creepy crawlies in places we haven't seen them all summer.
It doesn't necessarily mean you've suddenly developed a pest problem.
Changes in temperature, food availability and natural lifecycles can all affect where insects are active and, of course, we tend to notice them much more once they're sharing our indoor space!
A few simple autumn habits can help:
Clear leaves and debris from around buildings
Check gaps around windows and doors
Keep bins closed and clean
Don't leave food sitting uncovered
Deal with leaks and standing water
And remember, not every creepy crawly needs pest control.

Sometimes it just needs showing the door!

Yesterday was World Animal Day, and it got us thinking about something important to us at MPE.

Being a pest controller doesn't mean wanting to kill everything that moves!
Quite the opposite.

Responsible pest management is about understanding what you're dealing with, whether it's causing a problem and what the most appropriate course of action is.
You've probably already discovered that Michelle has a soft spot for most creatures; apparently even wasps can be "cute"!
Whether it's bees, bats, birds or other wildlife, if something doesn't need controlling, we'll always look for the responsible option.

Sometimes the best pest-control decision is knowing when NOT to treat.

Protecting people and property while respecting the environment around us will always matter at MPE.

Apparently today is World Smile Day… and even in pest control, there's plenty to smile about!

We know pest control probably isn't the first profession that springs to mind when you think of fun, but we genuinely love what we do.
We get to meet some brilliant customers, work alongside fantastic local businesses, learn from others in our industry and, as you've probably noticed from our posts, have quite a few laughs along the way!
Not every day is glamorous; you'd only need to look at some of Nick and Michelle's jobs to know that, but being part of a great team makes even the messier days better.

So, for World Smile Day, here's your reminder to find something that makes you smile today.

And if all else fails… there's always Trixie!

And just like that… September is done!

We've gone from late summer wasps to cooler mornings, darker evenings and the first real signs of autumn pest activity.

October tends to bring a different set of challenges, so our advice going into the new month is simple: Don't wait until you have a big problem to pay attention to the little signs. Scratching, droppings, gnaw marks, unusual smells or repeated sightings are all worth investigating.

Here's to October, pumpkins, crunchy leaves and preferably only the decorative creepy crawlies!

Tomorrow is World Heart Day, but here's our slightly different take on it…

Running a small business can mean constantly being switched on.
Customers, staff, paperwork, training, compliance, networking, and occasionally a phone call about something with considerably more legs than you'd like!

So today we're reminding ourselves that looking after a business also means looking after the people behind it.
Take the lunch break.
Get some fresh air.
Make the appointment you've been putting off.
Check in with somebody else.

The business needs you, but you need looking after too.

YOU ASKED… WE ANSWERED

“If my house is clean, surely I won't get pests?”

Unfortunately, that's a myth.

Good hygiene absolutely helps reduce the things that attract pests, but even beautifully clean homes and businesses can experience pest activity.
Pests aren't judging your housekeeping.
They're looking for the basics: food, water, warmth and shelter.
A tiny structural gap, damaged drain, neighbouring activity or accessible roof space can sometimes be all that's needed.

So please don't feel embarrassed about calling a pest controller.
We've seen it all, and we're far more interested in working out why it's happening than judging anybody's home or business.

Hello Autumn!

Today marks the Autumn Equinox, and the change of season isn't only noticeable to us.

As temperatures begin to fall, rats and mice become increasingly interested in somewhere warm, dry and close to a reliable food source.
Homes, schools, warehouses, offices, hospitality venues- they're not particularly fussy!

This is why we talk so much about prevention at MPE.
Finding and closing an entry point now is much easier than discovering someone has already moved in later.

So, while we're embracing jumpers, crunchy leaves and hot drinks, we're also entering one of the busiest parts of the pest-control calendar.

Welcome to autumn!
