You may have seen today's media reports suggesting that new restrictions on wood-burning stoves could be introduced in parts of London.
The Mayor of London has asked Government for additional powers that could allow area-specific restrictions on solid-fuel burning.
The SIA supports action to improve air quality, but we believe any new measures must be based on evidence and recognise that an open fire, an older stove and a modern Ecodesign-compliant stove are very different in terms of their emissions.
Government data also shows that particulate emissions from domestic combustion have been falling.
Rather than blanket restrictions, we believe the focus should be on continuing to reduce emissions through advanced appliances, the right fuel, correct installation and maintenance, and responsible burning.
