MJW Architects are very pleased to be short listed for this year’s RIBA Regional Design Awards for Meadow Bank.
Set within a sensitive woodland and streamside location near Bath, this sustainable home employs a split-plan arrangement with two distinct wings - one for living, the other for sleeping - connected by a fully glazed link that reduces the perceived mass of the building and frames views across the landscape.
Built to exceptional environmental standards, the home achieves outstanding thermal performance through high levels of insulation, airtight construction, and renewable energy systems. Vertical timber cladding and corrugated metal roofing reference both the woodland setting and the agricultural vernacular of the Somerset countryside, whilst uncultivated gardens and a wild grass roof enhance biodiversity and integrate the building into its rural context.
The combination of sustainable design quality and sensitive landscape integration secured planning permission via appeal for new residential development outside the village development boundary.

Irregular metal roofing, random charred timber wall cladding and hidden slim frame glazing almost complete on our barn conversion this morning.

MJW Architects are delighted to see our sustainable designed new house complete. Located in the open countryside, outside Development Limits, Planning Permission was difficult but the planners liked our sustainable design and permission was granted. The timber wall cladding and grass roof, are now nicely blending into the countryside setting. Our clients are very happy!

Our barn conversion in Somerset is progressing well, with a strong focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. This week, underground pipework is being installed for the ground source heat pump (GSHP) system — a key component in achieving Passivhaus standards for low-energy heating and cooling. More updates to follow as the project develops!

We recently caught up with a former client for whom we designed and built this small front porch extension in Holcombe, Somerset. Although it was completed some years ago, it still draws compliments for the quality of its design and materials.
