Blondin Ropeways - High above the slate quarries, a single cable stretched across a pit between two masts transporting slate with the lifting capacity of around 3 tons.
The Blondin system named after the daredevil Charles Blondin who walked across Niagara Falls on a tightrope in 1852, was basically a giant aerial crane. Suspended wagons would glide across the quarry, lifting slate from one level to another with precision.
The first two in the slate industry were introduced at Pen yr Orsedd Quarry, Nantlle, North Wales in 1899, these systems transformed how stone was moved, turning impossible terrain into a working network in the sky.

Using a traditional method to split a massive block of Welsh slate from Ffestiniog Quarry.
The process begins by carefully drilling along the natural cleavage line of the slate. Plug and feathers are then inserted into the hole, making sure the plug (chisel) is perfectly aligned with the cleavage plane.
With steady, even pressure, the stone begins to respond, eventually splitting cleanly along its natural grain. A technique passed down through generations, combining skill, patience, and a deep understanding of the material.
