Scything is a traditional and sensitive way to manage a wildflower meadow. Unlike powered machinery, it is quiet, produces no emissions while in use and allows the meadow to be cut gradually, giving insects and other wildlife more opportunity to move to safety.

Removing the cut vegetation also helps reduce soil fertility. This prevents vigorous grasses from dominating and gives a wider variety of wildflowers the chance to thrive.

From seasonal scything and collecting the cuttings to the ongoing management of established or newly created meadows, our horticultural team can help your meadow become healthier, more diverse and better for wildlife.

A lovely update from one of our gardens in Claygate 🌿

Progress in Bletchingly - lots of ground prerogative for a large wildflower meadow.
Poor soil helps with meadow establishment and this soil is about as poor as it gets!

Guildford project completed! - just couple of plants to go in when the heat calms down. Loved working on this project and it’s all come together well! Revisiting a lovely garden we completed at the end of last year

This project brought together dry stone walling, native hedging, dead hedging, and the beginnings of what is becoming a beautiful wildflower meadow.

Today, Gary, our Horticultural Manager, was hard at work scything the meadow, helping to encourage strong, diverse growth and keeping this evolving landscape thriving.

No music needed for this one. Just the sound of birdsong and a garden settling beautifully into its surroundings. 🐦

A special find while working on a garden project for Wild by Design today... a female stag beetle!

These remarkable beetles are one of the UK's most important and protected insects, relying on dead and decaying wood to complete their lifecycle. Finding one is a great reminder of why creating wildlife-friendly spaces matters.

Every log pile, habitat corner, and natural feature can make a difference. 💚

Ponds can go anywhere. This small pond was created in a courtyard garden, proving that even compact spaces can support a thriving habitat for wildlife.
Set against the woven steel fencing we installed earlier this year, the pond creates a striking focal point while bringing movement, reflection and tranquillity to the garden. Beyond its visual appeal, ponds provide valuable benefits for nature, attracting birds, pollinators, frogs and other wildlife, helping to boost biodiversity in even the smallest outdoor spaces.
A beautiful feature for people and a valuable resource for nature.
