I regularly see posts on here and other social media platforms asking for recommendations for electricians, with replies ranging from established businesses to people simply offering a phone number and a low price.
Everyone wants good value for money, but before choosing an electrician, I’d recommend taking a few minutes to check the following:
1. If the work requires Building Regulations notification (such as a new circuit, consumer unit replacement, EV charger, solar installation, or certain work in bathrooms), ensure the electrician is registered with a Competent Person Scheme such as NAPIT or NICEIC. It’s worth checking their membership directly on the relevant scheme’s website to confirm their registration is current.
2. Check they hold Public Liability Insurance and, if they carry out EICRs or provide professional reports, Professional Indemnity Insurance.
3. Take a look at their reviews and do a little research on the individual or company.
4. Ensure you’ll receive the correct certification for the work. This is important for your records, future house sales, and insurance purposes should anything ever go wrong.
Be cautious of anyone offering to replace a consumer unit, install a new circuit, EV charger, solar PV system or battery storage without mentioning certification or Building Regulations compliance. These works should be correctly certified and, where applicable, notified through a Competent Person Scheme.
These checks only take a few minutes and can provide peace of mind that the work is being carried out safely, competently and in compliance with current regulations.
Price is always a factor, but so are quality of workmanship, qualifications, competence, compliance and safety.
As a NAPIT Registered electrician with 17 years’ experience in the industry and a third-generation electrician, these are some of the key things I believe homeowners should consider before choosing who to trust with electrical work in their home.
Hopefully this helps anyone looking for an electrician on here.
