SUMMER BANK HOLIDAY IS COMING… GET YOUR ORDERS IN EARLY

The August Bank Holiday weekend is nearly here, and whether your plans involve a beer garden, BBQ, festival, scooter rally or simply switching off for a few days, there’s one thing you don’t want to be thinking about…

So, before the out-of-office replies go on and the tools go down, here’s a quick reminder:

Need delivery before the Bank Holiday?

Place your order by 12pm on Thursday 27th August for delivery on Friday 28th August.

Orders placed after the cut-off will be scheduled for delivery from Tuesday 1st September.

Our Portsmouth Trade Counter will also be OPEN as normal on Friday 28th August, 07:30–17:00 for collections and those inevitable last-minute top-ups.

The Industrial Revolution didn’t just change manufacturing – it changed roofing too.

As factories, mills and warehouses became larger, the way buildings were designed had to change. Wide open spaces were needed inside, and traditional pitched roofs weren’t always practical.

Flat roofs became the obvious solution.

Of course, that created another challenge. Covering a much larger roof area meant finding reliable ways to keep water out, especially in the British climate.

That’s where some of the earliest built-up roofing systems came into their own, using layers of hot tar, pitch and gravel to create a durable waterproof barrier.

Compared with today’s membranes and liquid waterproofing systems, the materials were relatively simple. But at the time, they represented a huge step forward and helped support Britain’s rapid industrial growth.

It’s interesting to look back because many of the principles behind modern flat roofing—protecting large roof areas, managing water effectively and building for longevity—are still just as important today. The materials have changed, but the objective hasn’t.

Next week, we’ll move forward again to explore how the rebuilding of Britain after World War II helped shape many of the flat roofing systems and commercial buildings we still see today.
