⚠️ Smelling burning or hot tar with your EV charger?
EV chargers are a brilliant addition to any home and make running an electric car incredibly convenient. Every now and then though, adding a new electrical load can highlight older connections that may just need a bit of maintenance.
We were recently called out after a customer noticed a slight hot/tar smell when charging. The charger itself was working perfectly. It turned out the main fuse terminals had simply loosened slightly over many years and just needed checking and tightening.
It’s nothing to worry about, but it’s a good reminder: if anything ever doesn’t feel quite right after an install, it’s always worth getting it looked at.
Keep an eye (and nose) out for:
👉A warm or unusual smell near the main fuse
👉Any signs of ageing around older equipment
In most cases, it’s a quick check and easy fix. EV chargers are safe, reliable, and a great upgrade for your home. This is just part of keeping everything in top condition as your electrical usage evolves.
