Your heating bill could be about to get a LOT more expensive.

The BBC is reporting that energy bills could rise again from January - just as we’re heading into the coldest part of the year.

We can’t control energy prices, but we can make sure we’re not wasting the heat we’re already paying for.

Here are 4 simple things you can check yourself 👇

🌡️ Check your thermostat
Turning your thermostat down by even 1 degree can reduce how much energy you use. Find a temperature that is comfortable for you without overheating your home.

⏰ Check your heating schedule
Take 5 minutes to look at when your heating actually comes on and goes off. Are you heating the house when everyone’s out or when you’re already in bed? Adjust the timings to suit your routine.

♨️ Check your radiators
If they are cold at the top, they may need bleeding. If some rooms are getting much hotter than others, your system may also benefit from balancing. And make sure furniture or curtains aren’t blocking the heat.

🏠 If you have underfloor heating - don’t treat it like radiators
Underfloor heating works best at lower temperatures and with more consistent control. Avoid repeatedly turning it right up when you’re cold and then switching it back off, it takes longer to respond than radiators.

And finally, keep up with your annual boiler service to make sure it is operating safely and efficiently as it should be, particularly before it’s working its hardest over winter.

Ofgem has announced the Energy Price Cap is rising 3.6% from 1st October. 😬

3 checks to do before the heating goes back on to ensure you aren’t wasting money:

⏰ Check your heating schedule - are you heating the house when nobody’s home?

🌡️ Check the thermostat, turning it up doesn’t make your home heat up any faster.

⚙️ Check your boiler settings, many boilers are set to a higher flow temperature than they actually need.

And if your boiler is due a service, getting it checked before winter means you’re much less likely to discover a problem when you actually need it.

The first freezing day of the year is really not the day you want to find out your heating isn’t working!

Is your thermostat costing you money?

An old, poorly positioned or incorrectly programmed thermostat could mean your heating is running when you don’t need it, or working harder than it should.

A few things worth checking:

• Is your heating coming on when nobody is home?
• Are you constantly turning the thermostat up and down?
• Is your heating schedule actually set around your routine?
• Is your thermostat positioned somewhere that gives you an accurate reading? (NOT next to the window!)
• Would better heating controls give you more control over when you’re using energy?

With last week’s heatwave a distant memory, now is a good time to check your heating controls before you start relying on them every day again.
