Our team recently completed concrete coring and structural slab investigation works at the National Coal Mining Museum for England, in advance of the installation of a new emergency winch system.
The investigation was undertaken to confirm slab build-up, assess internal condition, and accurately identify reinforcement layouts prior to intrusive works.
The scope of works included:
• Diamond concrete coring to verify slab thickness and composition
• Reinforcement detection and mapping to mitigate risk during drilling and fixings
• Use of Proceq Pundit Live PD8050 ultrasonic tomography to assess internal concrete integrity and identify anomalies
• Deployment of Proceq Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to locate reinforcement, embedded services, and subsurface features with high positional accuracy
• Correlation of non-destructive test data with core results to inform installation design and method statements
Working within a heritage structure required a controlled, data-led approach, ensuring minimal disruption while providing reliable structural information to support safe installation.
A good example of how detailed pre-construction investigation and NDT reduces uncertainty, improves design confidence, and minimises on-site risk.
