Trees will often produce deadwood as part of their natural lifecycle, which can provide valuable habitats to a wide range of ecology. However in some urban environments, deadwood can pose a health and safety risk to the travelling public and other third parties, and must therefore be managed to reduce the likelihood of an accident occurring.

Our teams have recently been working on these Oaks near Sheffield park to remove the risk of falling deadwood and associated risk to the travelling public.

This mature oak tree had significant decay at its base. To retain (rather than remove) it, our team carried out pollarding to improve stability.

The tree was subject to a preservation order so an application was submitted to the local planning authority to obtain permission for the work.

With the decay removed, the tree can now regrow in a strong and healthy way. 🌳

Under BS3998:2010 recommendations (offering guidance on tree management options), the trees were pruned by 30% of their original volume to encourage them to continue thriving.

Bede's Senior School reluctantly took the decision to remove an overmature Chestnut tree due to safety concerns around its condition and age.

The Chesnut was subject to a tree preservation order, so once permission from Wealden District Council was granted, we dismantled it in sections over 2 days. Rigging equipment allowed us to carry out the felling without causing any damage to surrounding buildings.

In its place, a native Broadleaf will be planted by the school. 🌱
