A great evening at Hulley and Kirkwood's Fireworks on the Water last night.

Dan, our MD, and Roy, one of our Contracts Managers, were there representing Mercury for an evening of informal networking and to enjoy the British Firework Championships.

With our head office in Plymouth, it was a great night to enjoy our city and foreshore. The drone display was a brilliant addition this year too.

Thanks to the Hulley & Kirkwood team for the great event and hospitality. We really enjoyed it!

As we ramp up our school projects now that the summer holidays are underway, we're casting our minds back to the work experience placements we hosted before the end of term.

We welcomed three students across our offices, giving them an insight into life in the construction industry and the many different roles that keep our projects moving.

It has been a pleasure reading through their feedback. There were some light-hearted observations, including how much coffee our team seems to drink, comments that they wished the work experience days were longer (we must be doing something right!), and, most importantly, positive feedback on the experience they gained and the warm welcome they received from everyone at Mercury.

Thank you to everyone across the business who took the time to share their knowledge, answer questions and help make the placements such a success.

We wish all three students all the best with the remainder of their studies and whatever comes next.

Happy Friday!

We delivered the refurbishment of the Alexander Centre in Tavistock, transforming the building into a specialist learning hub for Castlebridge School.

The project included the installation of Ecophon’s Clipso™ stretched fabric ceiling system, delivered by specialist installer Crossfield Interiors. The solution helped create a calm and comfortable environment to support pupils and staff within this SEND setting.

Great to see the completed project featured in this case study and to see the positive impact the facility is having for the Castlebridge School community.

Project award confirmed for the new multi-use hall at Ivybridge Community College.

Following a competitive tender process, we have been appointed to deliver this exciting new addition to the College’s facilities, and our team is looking forward to bringing the project to life.

The new hall will provide a flexible space for both college and community use, including:

• Whole-year group assemblies,
• Examination layout,
• Theatre-style seating and
• Supporting toilets, changing rooms and office accommodation.

The design has been developed with long-term performance in mind, incorporating improved fabric efficiency, hybrid stack ventilation and air source heat pump systems to support lower energy operation.

Externally, the scheme will include new planting, seating areas, a green roof, rain gardens and sustainable drainage, all integrated into the wider site.

A significant project for the College and the wider community, now underway!

We look forward to working with the College, South West Norse, Airey & Coles Consulting Engineers and our supply chain partners to deliver this important new facility.

Mercury Construction features in the Summer edition of Master Builder, the magazine of the Federation of Master Builders, marking 20 years in business.

'Still Building After All These Years' includes a Q&A with Jo and Steve Welch. It looks back over the past two decades and some of the challenges along the way. The article describes Mercury as "a story of persistence and resilience." That feels a fair reflection of the last 20 years.

Thanks to the Federation of Master Builders for the feature, and to everyone who has supported Mercury along the way.

We were pleased to welcome Year 10 students from South Molton Community College to our South Molton Pannier Market project this week, providing an insight into the restoration works we're undertaking alongside an overview of careers within the construction industry.

Our thanks go to the school for visiting, and to our site team and South Molton Scaffolding Ltd for their support in delivering the session.

We’re proud to have progressed to the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community.

This year, we are one of 45 South West employers to receive the silver award.

With veterans making up 13% of our workforce, this is something that means a great deal to us. Their skills, experience and approach make a valuable contribution to our business every day.

As a company operating in the South West, home to the highest proportion of veterans in England, we recognise the importance of supporting the Armed Forces community in the areas we work.

Thank you to everyone who has played a part in this achievement.

Hard hats, high-vis and plenty of hands up ! We had a great time at Ted Wragg Trust's Whipton Barton Federation recently, delivering an interactive assembly.

Our team introduced students to the different roles in construction and talked about our project on their site, replacing the boundary wall and fencing along the school’s perimeter. We also explored health and safety, both on site and around the school, with lots of volunteers trying on PPE and learning what each piece does. The pupils were great at our “spot the hazards” challenge, lessons we hope can continue into their everyday.

We finished with examples of environmental protection, including an initiative to repurpose the school’s old railings into the Exeter community, more on that soon.

A big thank you to the staff and students for our warm welcome and brilliant engagement, and to Larisa Conman, Tom Moore and Oliver Jewell for delivering the session. Inspiring young people and giving them insight into the construction industry is an important part of the social value we aim to deliver through our projects.

As part of Women in Construction Week in the UK, we’re celebrating all the fantastic women in our team and across the wider construction industry. While the sector still has a way to go, Mercury is already ahead in supporting women.

Later this year, we’re looking forward to welcoming a young female school leaver to our Exeter office for work experience, where she will be mentored by our Operations Manager, Carrielea, to show that construction can be a real career option for everyone.

From strong representation across our workforce, to Sam’s recent MCIOB membership, and a recent SWWIC event, our team continues to learn, grow, and get involved across the sector.
