We’ve won another BALI National Landscape Award 🏆

We’re incredibly proud to announce that YGS Landscapes has won a 2026 BALI National Landscape Award for our grounds maintenance work at Sherford, and it is one that means a great deal to the whole company.

Our relationship with Sherford began in 2014 and, over the past 12 years, our role has grown alongside the development. Today, our teams maintain an extensive and incredibly varied green infrastructure estate - from the country park, sports pitches and urban parks to ponds, trees, hedgerows, ecological habitats and the living wall at Sherford’s entrance.

But this award is about much more than the scale of the maintenance operation.
Over those 12 years, we have developed a genuinely collaborative way of working with Sherford. Our involvement extends beyond maintaining what is already there; we contribute practical knowledge as new phases are developed, help establish new landscapes and work proactively to support their long-term resilience and quality.

And it was particularly rewarding to see that recognised in the judges’ feedback:

“On the face of it, a straight forward maintenance for a very large development, but the layers and the proactive approach of the contractor make it more than just fulfilling a 'Maintenance Contract'. YGS have a very close working relationship with the client and a deep understanding of the site/project. The client sees them more as a partner than just a maintenance contractor.”

That last sentence means a lot to us, because it reflects exactly what we have worked to build at Sherford since 2014.

People from across YGS have been involved with Sherford at some stage during that journey, so this really is an achievement for the whole company and testament to the knowledge, commitment and hard work of everyone who has played their part.

Well. That was August.

Another month of high temperatures, a hosepipe ban, a solar eclipse and even a couple of unexpected four-legged visitors to the office.

Meanwhile, across YGS, the teams have been getting on with the job.

August saw our people working across sites throughout Devon and Cornwall, alongside training and development back at the yard and all the usual activity that goes on behind the scenes.

The prolonged hot and dry conditions have continued to present challenges across landscaping and grounds maintenance, particularly when it comes to establishing and maintaining grass and planting. As always, it means adapting to the conditions and planning the work accordingly.

Our August round-up captures a bit of everything that went into the month - people, projects, training and everyday life at YGS.

We've been British Association of Landscape Industries members for 45 years and The Landscaper Magazine has covered the story this month. Plenty has changed in that time. What hasn't is bringing people through - our first apprentice joined in 1997 and is still working with us, and five more start with us at the end of September.

We went back to Exeter Science Park at the end of July 🌾

This was bare red Devon earth when we started - pots set out in rows, semi-mature trees waiting. Now it's the second summer since planting, and it's already reading as a mature landscape.
60+ semi-mature trees, over 10,000 plants and grasses, and over 7,000 bulbs.

Underneath it all, the trees in the hard landscape sit in engineered soil cells beneath the paving, so the roots have room to spread, and the rain gardens hold and filter surface water on site.

⚽ A bit of fun... and all for a great cause! 💜

Last Friday, some of our team swapped their safety boots for football boots as we took part in the 5-a-Side Charity Football Tournament at Sherford Sports Hub, raising money for Crisis, the national charity supporting people experiencing homelessness.

It was a brilliant day of friendly competition, teamwork and plenty of laughs, with local businesses coming together to support a fantastic cause.

A huge thank you to Millie Luscombe for organising such a well-run event. We really appreciate all the hard work that went into making the day such a success.

We were proud to be involved and already look forward to the next one!

Due to continued growth and an expanding project portfolio, we are seeking experienced Fencing Operatives to join our team. Ideal for someone with commercial and/or domestic fencing experience who takes pride in delivering high-quality work safely and efficiently as part of a team.

We are looking for someone who is:

✔️Skilled and reliable with practical fencing experience
✔️Experience working within commercial landscaping environments, including housing developments
✔️Full UK Driving Licence (essential)
✔️CSCS card (essential)
