We’re hiring: Fire & Security Engineer

We’re looking for an experienced Fire & Security Engineer to join the Uni-Lec team in Plymouth.

This is a varied role covering fire detection and alarm systems, CCTV, intruder alarms and access control, working across commercial and residential projects throughout Devon, Cornwall and the wider South West.

A recognised fire alarm qualification is essential, along with strong practical fire alarm experience and a good understanding of wider security systems.

Experience with Paxton Net2, data/networking, electrical or professional AV systems would be a bonus.

There’s also an opportunity to broaden your skills beyond traditional fire and security engineering, with full training available in Control4, Lutron and other AV and automation technologies.

The role includes:

• Full-time, permanent employment
• Salary dependent on experience and qualifications
• Company pension
• Fuel card
• Overtime opportunities
• Specialist manufacturer training and development

Due to the nature of some of our work, including projects in schools, defence environments and other restricted locations, applicants must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DBS, security and client/site clearances required for the role.

Will the WiFi still cope when every room is occupied again?

During an empty period, a student property’s broadband can appear perfectly adequate.

The real test comes in September, when every tenant is simultaneously using phones, laptops, televisions, games consoles and video calls.

In larger HMOs, the problem is often not the incoming broadband speed. It is how the connection is distributed around the building.

Warning signs include:
• strong WiFi near the router but weak coverage upstairs
• bedrooms relying on plug-in boosters
• tenants repeatedly restarting equipment
• unreliable connections when the property is fully occupied
• one tenant’s heavy usage affecting everyone else

A properly planned network considers the building layout, access-point locations, wired connections and how many people will use the system at once.

For landlords and property managers, August is a useful opportunity to resolve these issues before new tenants arrive—not after the first complaints.

Before we recommend a CCTV system, we prefer to show clients what the cameras actually do.

Today we’re preparing a TVT camera demo using the TIPC-6BF/W, TIPC-6BV/W and TIPC-6TF/L/W.

A spec sheet can tell you the basics, but it does not always answer the questions that matter on site:
• What does the image actually look like?
• Which camera style suits the location?
• How clear is the view in the areas that matter?
• How easy is the system to use day to day?
• What will the client see when they check footage back?

For businesses, schools, managed properties and commercial sites, CCTV is not just about putting cameras on walls. It is about choosing the right cameras, positioning them properly and making sure the system is useful when it is needed.

Most people never see this part of the job.

When people think about AV or networking projects, they usually picture the finished TV, meeting room or WiFi.

What they don't see is everything that happens before the handover.

Every cable is checked.

Every network port is tested.

Devices are configured.

Software is updated.

Security settings are applied.

Networks are documented.

Nothing is left to chance.

It's also where many problems are avoided before the client ever notices them.

A poorly labelled network cabinet might not seem like a big issue today.

But six months later, when another switch is added or a fault needs diagnosing, those few extra hours spent commissioning and documenting the installation make all the difference.

We believe good installations aren't just about how they look when they're finished.

They're about making sure they're easy to maintain, expand and support for years to come.

It's one of those parts of the job that clients rarely see.....but it's one of the things we're most proud of.

The hidden cost of poor WiFi in HMOs.

Nobody leaves a five-star review because the WiFi worked.

But they'll certainly complain when it doesn't.

For many landlords and property managers, internet connectivity is now just as important as heating and hot water.

We often see the same issues in HMOs and student accommodation:
• One broadband router trying to cover an entire building.
• WiFi extenders added over the years to patch dead spots.
• Bedrooms with poor or unreliable signal.
• Streaming that buffers.
• Video calls that drop out.
• Multiple tenants competing for bandwidth.

The result isn't just frustrated tenants.

It can mean more maintenance calls, more complaints and, ultimately, a poorer experience for everyone living in the property.

The solution isn't always faster broadband.
