Hiring machines vs owning machines
OWN THE MACHINE — OR HIRE WHAT YOU NEED?
Some businesses see owning machinery as an investment in their future. Others see hiring as a way to stay flexible and keep money available for the next opportunity.
Our big question:
“Does owning your machinery make your business stronger — or tie up money that could work harder elsewhere?”
There’s a case for both.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴:
▪️ Control over availability, maintenance and how the machine is used.
▪️ Potentially lower costs when it’s consistently working.
▪️ An asset you can sell when it’s time to change.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴:
▪️ Less money tied up in buying machinery.
▪️ The flexibility to match equipment to each job.
▪️ Servicing and breakdown support, depending on the hire agreement.
But let’s challenge both sides:
— Is a paid-for machine really “free” to run once you count repairs, insurance, storage, transport and depreciation?
— Does hiring still make sense when a machine is working almost every day?
— How much does an owned machine need to work before buying becomes the better decision?
— Does ownership give you control, or pressure you to keep a machine busy even when it isn’t right for the job?
— Do hire companies provide enough reliability and support to justify their rates?
— Is a mix of owned core machines and hired specialist equipment the best answer?
We’re a plant hire business, so you know our perspective — but we want to hear the strongest case for both sides.
