I've finally potted my lucky bamboo! It's been in its little test tube for months, poor thing! No matter, though, it's so tough, it can handle nearly anything. Still, it's time to give her some love, a new home this morning, she'll do much better now.

Lucky bamboo is, you guessed it..... lucky! The number of stalks you have also carries meaning, I've opted for 1. This represents truth and commitment to your endevours. Simplicity and independance and a life focused on essentials and self-reliance. It also symbolises new beginnings and personal growth.

The later dead heads are now appearing in the garden. Many would hastily cut these off as soon as they appear in an attempt to freshen the beds up and hold on to the last bits of summer. At this time of year, though, you're just delaying the inevitable, death is coming, like it or not. It is better to embrace it and try to look at it through a different lens.

This garden has been designed specifically around seed heads and winter interest as the customer loves the gardens at Hauser and Wirth down in Somerset. In a couple of months when the colour fades, these will create a beautiful display by themselves, and rather than death and decay, you will see plump seed heads with the promise of abundant new beginnings. Sometimes, you just have to push through the slightly messy bits. It's not about what a garden looks like in a specific moment but how it works as a whole. Trying to make each moment look perfect will mean that when the winter comes, your garden won't stand well or have any interest.

I always think the sign of a good garden is when it continues to look good through the winter months, showing its structural integrity.

Some bright, cheerful flowers for us all that are very much not on trend at the minute! I have noticed that current design trends lack in colour and vibrancy. Everybody seems to want pale muted colours, which can be lovely and realxing, but it does get a little bit boring and lacks excitement.

Ideally I'd like to have all the colours of the rainbow in my garden! When I'm designing a space, I think way more about the movement, structure, and texture of the plants than I do the colour pallet. I want the plants to move around each other well throughout the year, creating rise and fall within the beds with constant flowering displays throughout the year. If you get that right, the colour or look of the individual flowers doesn't really matter that much. Focusing too much on colour shows a lack of imagination.
