Installing a mezzanine is not just about creating extra space. It is also a regulated construction project that must meet a wide range of safety and compliance requirements under UK Building Regulations.

Our team ensures all designs are fully compliant from the outset. That means:

• Structural calculations for expected loads
• Fire escape routes and resistance
• Stair widths, handrails and edge protection
• Sufficient headroom and access routes

Building Regulations aren't just a formality – they’re critical for long-term safety, usability and future inspections.

A mezzanine supplier may look credible on paper, but confidence comes from proven delivery. When assessing a supplier, it is worth looking beyond the headline quote and asking deeper questions. Have they delivered projects at scale? Can they manage live environments, phased installation and complex loading requirements? Do they understand your sector?

Experience matters because it reduces risk. A supplier with a long track record has usually seen problems before and knows how to solve them quickly.

That is one of the themes we explore in our blog on how to choose a mezzanine supplier with confidence.

The floor is part of the automation system. A robot doesn't adjust its route around a damaged joint or uneven surface. It repeats the same path, hundreds of times a day, placing the same wheel loads over the same spots. The floor must be designed for that - not selected after the automation is already specified.

There are five common mezzanine decking systems. The right one depends on your operation, your loads and what you might introduce later.

Kim Hancox joined Hi-Level as Purchasing Administrator in February 2025. She sits at the heart of the supply chain - making sure every component needed for a bespoke mezzanine project reaches the right place at the right time, from a seven-metre beam down to a single fixing.

A recent site visit near Portsmouth brought that responsibility into focus. "Seeing it made me realise that nothing can be forgotten. Whether it is one screw or a seven-metre beam, every component is just as important."

Small floor defects can create big robotic inefficiencies. Inconsistent friction, uneven joints or surface roughness increase vibration, disrupt sensors and force robots to slow down or recalibrate. Over time, this reduces throughput and accelerates wear on equipment.

Robot-ready flooring is designed to deliver predictable movement, stable sensor performance and consistent speed ... even under continuous operation.

For automated warehouses, flooring is no longer background infrastructure. It’s part of the system.
