Builder’s Definition of the Good Life: Forget the fancy stuff🎩

For us, the good life looks a little more like this:

A floor that’s actually level. ✅ A wall that’s genuinely straight. 🧱A door that closes without needing a shoulder barge.🚪 Finding your pencil exactly where you left it. ✏️ The drill having enough battery when you need it. 🔋 A delivery arriving on the day it was supposed to. 🚛 And, perhaps the greatest luxury of all… a cup of tea that hasn’t gone cold.☕️

Because there’s something pretty satisfying about standing back at the end of the day and thinking: “Yep. That’s straight.”

That’s the good life to us. 🔨

Earthships are homes designed to blend seamlessly into their surroundings. By using the earth as natural insulation, incorporating passive solar design and often making use of recycled and natural materials, these homes are paving the way for ultra-low-carbon, resilient living. ♻

This picture is Earthship Brighton, one of the UK’s most famous earth-sheltered homes. Its walls are literally packed with soil and built using over 1,000 recycled old tires! Because it's buried into the landscape, it uses natural thermal mass to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer - completely eliminating the need for traditional central heating.

The £1 Mistake: Would you really save £1 if it could cost you £1,000 later? 💷

Here's a simple example.

You're fitting a new window and need to seal around it.

You can spend a few extra pounds on the right quality sealant and proper preparation - or use a cheaper product and rush the job.

It looks fine when it's finished. Six months later, water starts getting in.

Now you're potentially looking at damaged plaster, damp insulation and redecorating.

All because saving a few pounds seemed like a good idea at the time. Sometimes the cheapest part of the job is the part you really shouldn't cut corners on.

At Hurstmore, we believe in doing it properly the first time - because fixing a problem is rarely cheaper than preventing it.

⚒ Working behind the Scenes at the Barbican! 🎭🎶

See this picture of the Brutalist columns and walls inside the Barbican - the rough, stone-like texture isn’t from a machine mould. It was entirely hand-crafted.

Architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon wanted to avoid a flat, "cheap" concrete finish. Instead, teams of stonemasons spent YEARS using handheld pick-hammers and bush-hammers to painstakingly chip away the smooth outer layer of cured concrete.

This labour-intensive process exposed the coarse granite aggregate hidden inside, turning massive structural walls into deeply textured, light-catching works of art.
Because it was done by hand, no two surfaces are exactly alike.
Proud to have our team working alongside a bit of architectural history! 🔨🧱

There are plenty of things people hear about building work that simply aren’t true…

❌ “You can knock down any wall.”
Not quite. Some walls are structural, and removing one can have serious consequences if it isn’t properly assessed and supported.

❌ “The more expensive materials are always better.”
Not necessarily. The right material depends on the project, location, use and how it’s installed.

❌“A quick coat of paint will hide everything.”
We wish! Paint can freshen things up, but it won’t fix damp, cracks, uneven surfaces or poor preparation.

❌ “Bigger tiles are easier to fit.”
They can actually require more planning and a very good surface. Small imperfections can become much more noticeable with large-format tiles.

❌ “Building work is just about the finished product.”
A huge amount of the quality is in the work you never see — insulation, waterproofing, structural work, fixings and preparation.

👷 The biggest myth of all?
That good building work happens by chance.

It takes planning, skilled trades, good materials and plenty of attention to detail.

“Is it a load-bearing wall?” 🧱

It’s one of those questions you hear whenever someone starts talking about knocking a wall down. And for good reason! 🔨

A load-bearing wall isn’t just standing there looking important — it could be supporting floors, ceilings or even the roof above it. So removing it without knowing what it’s doing can cause rather more trouble than simply creating more space!

Before reaching for the sledgehammer, it’s important to establish what the wall is supporting and how the structure will be safely supported if it’s removed or altered.

That might mean bringing in a structural engineer to assess the wall and specify the right solution, such as a steel beam. Building Regulations and the necessary approvals also need to be considered.

At Hurstmore Developments, we make sure the right questions are asked before the work begins and bring in the appropriate specialists where required.

Because when it comes to structural walls, “I think it’s probably fine” isn’t quite a building method we recommend! 😉
