Is your boiler making strange noises as autumn approaches? 🔧
The sound can offer a clue:
🔊 Banging or clunking may be caused by trapped air, low water flow or “kettling”, where limescale or sludge makes the water overheat.
💧 Gurgling can indicate air in the system, low boiler pressure or water flow issues.
🫖 Whistling may point to restricted water flow, limescale or a component that needs checking.
⚠️ Kettling often sounds like a rumble or kettle boiling and shouldn’t be ignored. Left unresolved, it can put extra strain on your boiler.
A small hum can be normal, but persistent, worsening or unusually loud noises should always be checked by a qualified engineer. Don’t attempt to remove the boiler cover or repair internal components yourself.
If you notice a leak, a fault code, loss of heating or hot water, or the boiler keeps cutting out, contact MPM Plumbing & Heating for a professional service or repair. If you smell gas, turn off the supply if safe to do so, ventilate the area and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
With Gas Safety Week coming up from 14–20 September, it’s a good time to listen to your boiler and arrange a check before the colder weather arrives.
