Native to central and southern Chile, this tall herbaceous perennial produces striking red tubular flowers arranged along upright flowering stems. It has lanceolate to elliptic leaves and can reach approximately 2 metres in height. Flowering during summer and early autumn, it attracts pollinators and adds architectural interest to borders. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and contains toxic alkaloids.

Native to central Chile, this distinctive evergreen shrub produces clusters of pink to reddish tubular flowers. It has sharp, spine-like green branches and greatly reduced leaves, with its green stems carrying out photosynthesis. The sharp spines provide protection against grazing animals. It prefers a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil and may require winter protection in colder parts of Scotland.

Native to North America, this herbaceous perennial produces numerous small, daisy-like flower heads with white to pale pink ray florets and central disc florets that change from yellow to reddish-purple. Flowering from late summer into autumn, it provides a valuable source of nectar and pollen for pollinating insects. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and is well suited to naturalistic planting schemes.

A recent practical session as part of my HND Plantmanship studies at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) involved maintaining the established climbing plants surrounding the entrance to the Science Buildings.
Working alongside fellow students and staff, we carried out selective pruning and reductions to manage excessive growth, maintain the shape of the climbers and keep the windows and surrounding building features clear.
With some of the growth extending to considerable heights, we used a tracked Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) to access the upper sections safely, alongside more traditional methods of pruning.
Two of the interesting climbing species found around the buildings were:
Hydrangea serratifolia – native to Chile and Argentina.
Hydrangea hydrangeoides – native to Japan.
Both belong to the Hydrangeaceae family and are excellent examples of how climbing plants can be trained and maintained to complement building architecture.
A valuable practical experience, combining plant identification, pruning techniques, working at height and the long-term management of established climbers.
It's great to continue developing my horticultural knowledge and practical skills through my studies, while bringing that experience back into my work at Terra Garden Maintenance.

A productive day carrying out garden maintenance in a beautifully established garden.
The work involved carefully trimming and shaping mature shrubs and conifers, maintaining their distinctive forms while keeping the surrounding planting looking neat and well managed.
Other tasks included:
Shrub trimming and topiary shaping.
Weeding and tidying established borders.
Removing unwanted smaller shrubs, including their root systems.
Clearing cuttings and general garden debris.
Additional topiary work throughout the garden, although not all of it was photographed.
With a garden containing such a varied collection of mature plants, careful maintenance is important to preserve its character and structure.
A satisfying day's work, keeping everything looking its best as we head towards autumn.

On 24th September, I had the opportunity to visit Benmore Botanic Garden as part of my HND Plantmanship studies.
Set within the mountains of Argyll, Benmore is home to an incredible collection of plants from around the world. During the visit, we explored the garden’s different plant collections, followed the moss-covered woodland trails and spent time looking at the huge variety of trees, shrubs and other plants growing throughout the garden.
One of the highlights was visiting the restored Victorian Fernery, which houses an impressive collection of ferns within a unique hillside glasshouse. We also walked along the famous Giant Redwood Avenue, where towering Sequoiadendron giganteum create one of the most impressive entrances to any garden I have visited.
Visits like this are an important part of my Plantmanship studies. Seeing mature specimens growing within an established landscape gives you a completely different understanding of a plant compared with simply learning its name from a book. It also provides an opportunity to look at identification features, growing conditions, plant associations and how different species are used within a designed landscape.
Another worthwhile day developing my plant knowledge and bringing more horticultural experience back into the work I do through Terra Garden Maintenance.

A hardy evergreen succulent ideal for rockeries, gravel gardens and stone crevices. It forms attractive rosettes of fleshy leaves and produces tall clusters of pink flowers in summer. Extremely tolerant of cold and exposed conditions, it thrives in full sun and free-draining soil. Avoid waterlogged ground, particularly during wet Scottish winters.

Mower? ✅
Chainsaw? ✅
Hedge cutters? ✅
Strimmer? ✅
Blower? ✅
Ladders? ✅
And the rest? ✅

Entire contents of the van? Aye, just strap it somewhere. 🚲🌳😂

The only slight issue is I might need to leave Perth on Monday to make it to Tuesday’s job.

A compact, low-growing perennial ideal for rockeries, gravel gardens and edging. It forms dense evergreen mats of foliage, producing masses of pink, red or white flowers in spring and early summer. Hardy and well suited to Scottish gardens, it prefers moist but well-drained soil and grows well in sun or partial shade, making it a reliable choice for adding colour and texture to rock gardens.
