History

The name ‘Tan’ is an affectionate name for ‘Aunt’ in the Caribbean - Aunty, Tanty, Tan! ‘Rosie’ is Monica’s grandmother who inspired her to cook, she was known as ‘Tan Rosie’ throughout the family and beyond. Monica is a seasoned cook with a strong Caribbean heritage. She started cooking from an early age in her home country of Carriacou. Since moving to England in the 1960’s she has always tried to mix Caribbean cooking with different cuisines.

“I love combining Caribbean flavours with my favourite foods. I try to bring a taste of ‘back home’ to everything I cook!”

Carriacou is an island parish of Grenada and is situated in the southern part of the Caribbean above Venezuela. It’s a sleepy, sun-kissed island measuring only 13 square miles. The island has many quiet sandy beaches with an array of palm trees facing the turquoise sea. Many of the neighbouring islands are home to many famous celebrities and rock stars! It’s the perfect holiday retreat! Carriacou is a traditional, laid back island with a rich cultural heritage. The original inhabitants were the Caribs and since then the island has been inhabited by Africans brought over during slavery which has been ruled by the French and British consecutively. The island has many French town names from their occupation during the 1800’s. Scottish boat builders were a common sight on the island and traditional boat-building continues today. Carriacou is an English speaking island which has descendants from Caribs, Africa, Scotland and England. The main island of Grenada is affectionately known as ‘The Spice Island.’ It produces spices which include Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Cloves, Turmeric and Ginger. It’s a beautiful island with a wealth of culinary history.

Another little memory of growing up in Carriacou. ❤️🇬🇩

Tanty Cynthia Cudjoe remembers becoming a Brownie as a young girl and spending around three years as part of the group.

It’s a simple childhood memory, but these are exactly the details we want Carriacou Stories to preserve — what children did, the groups they belonged to and what everyday life on the island was like.

Because history isn’t only the big events. It’s the everyday memories too.

“There weren’t many Carriacou people here…” 🇬🇩🇬🇧

Uncle Irwin Sylvester remembers the early Carriacou community in Birmingham — a small, close-knit group of people who looked out for one another and helped each other build their lives in Britain.

Before the community grew into what it is today, those connections mattered.

Stories like Uncle Irwin’s help us understand not just who came, but how a community was built once they arrived. 💛

After Hurricane Beryl, families had to start from scratch… ❤️🇬🇩

While travelling on the ferry from Petite Martinique, we met Mikey Bethel, a local contractor with over 20 years of experience in construction.

Mikey shares how his skills were passed down through his grandfather, who was a shipwright and carpenter, and the joy he feels handing families the keys to their new homes.

Following the devastation of Hurricane Beryl, rebuilding has taken on an even deeper meaning.

It’s not just about building houses. It’s about helping people have somewhere to call home again. ❤️

A lovely reminder of the skills, resilience and determination within our island communities.

We caught up with Mr Grill today in Carriacou… and he’s got something cooking for Friday! 🔥🇬🇩

This Friday night, Mr Grill will be serving up Oil Down and a selection of local dishes — so if you’re on the island, why not head down, enjoy some good food and support a local business? ❤️

We stopped by today, had something to eat and had a little catch-up with him — always good to see people doing their thing here in Carriacou.

Who’s heading to Mr Grill this Friday? 👀🇬🇩

“You were lucky to get meat on a Saturday…” 🇬🇩

Anthony Boatswain remembers a very different Carriacou — when you ate what your grandmother cooked, meat wasn’t an everyday food, and families learned to make the most of what they had.

Looking back from life in England, those memories also bring an appreciation for the generation that raised him and the resourcefulness that helped families survive. ❤️

Does Anthony’s memory sound familiar to your family?

“I loved going out fishing…” 🎣🇬🇩

For Seigert Cox, fishing was one of the pleasures of growing up in Carriacou.

Catching fish wasn’t just about food — it meant heading out on the water, sometimes travelling between the islands, including Grenville and Saint Vincent, and simply enjoying the experience.

Another everyday memory that gives us a glimpse into a different way of life. ❤️

Who remembers going fishing around Carriacou? 🎣

Some memories of Carriacou never leave you. ❤️🇬🇩

Kathleen Cox takes us back to the Carriacou she remembers growing up in — a very different time, but one that remains vivid all these years later.

It’s these personal memories of everyday island life that can so easily disappear if nobody records them.

And sometimes the smallest details tell us the most. ❤️

What memories of growing up in Carriacou have stayed with you?
