On Saturday 5th September I will be painting all day in Torquay as one of the featured artists in Artizan Collective ! You can find me 10am-4pm painting on Princess Pier - come and chat and see how I do it! There's also 9 other great artists dotted around Torre Abbey and the Pavilion areas. We'll all be painting away and chatting about our work.

On Sunday 6th it's also the in Torre Abbey, which is a great chance to try some plein air (outdoor) painting from 10am-4pm. And if you are feeling competitive, there's also the plein air painting competition on Sunday too, running from 10am-5pm.

So obviously Torquay is the arty place to be this weekend! Follow Artizan Collective for more details.

I've not been at my best over the last month and have barely been painting. It's OK, I'm rolling with the punches and letting rest and recuperation do their job.

On Saturday I was lucky enough to see the amazing Waldmuller room at the National Gallery. Not an artist I've ever heard of (Austrian from the early/mid 1800s) but his painting was absolutely inspiring. Years ahead of his time in this treatment of paint and surface. Immediately reminded me of Libby Walker whose work I admire so much.

Waldmuller was soo good I had to go and try to work out how he makes such amazing marks. Smooth surface, olied and thinned paint, minimal transparent colour pallete (burnt sienna, ultramarine, yellow oxide, and a transparent yellow) and adds I guess lead white when he needed to make an opaque colour. He loved to use the texture of the stiff brush bristles as well as scraping tools to create the directionality and expose the white surface of the panel.

What a learning experience!

Lovely to get out painting yesterday with Gabrielle Faeth Peckham. We went into the woods above Ivybridge, under the old trees and by the river.

It was a good start for me with an experimental piece which I messed up and tried to claw back. And a quick 45 minute one at the end. Gab's little painting was excellent.

Some good learning was had and I tried some new colour combinations and much thick paint application than I would usually go for.

Lovely day slowly working on this one in the studio. 3rd pic is the before painting - I'm still getting used to studio work but it's amazing what a bit of glazing can do. And how hard it is to glaze when painting en plein air!

An experimental day today. First experiment went well. Second one (with liquid charcoal) remains in the experimental stage. But not a bad experiment at all, I'll rework some ideas in the studio...

In the background I have been writing and starting to record podcast episodes. So stay tuned for those (pun intended). And thinking about having another artwork sale shortly.

I'm not usually one for touching things up in the studio, mostly because it just doesn't click for me. But now I've been painting more and more, I'm starting to feel confident reworking existing paintings.

The original piece (image 2) didn't quite hit the mark - painted in evening light which was dying, and unable to see my own painting clearly, it all went kind of grey, falling between two lighting ideas as the sun set and the streetlights came on. So I spent some time glazing and resurrecting it, pushing it more towards the nighttime scene with the dying light hanging in the sky.

I'm happy with it :)

Some progress pictures from another session on this one today. Not there yet but I'm loving painting the movement and transparency in the water. Not a bad location for it!

Another work in progress. Enough of a breeze to tolerate standing in the sun this morning. Painting the sea is so tricky, the tide falls fast and wind hugely effects what you are looking at. Went for the glassy reflections from when it was calm.
