🌿“The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.”🌿

Thousands of events are hosted across the UK, that demonstrate the brilliant action communities are taking to tackle climate change and restore nature - everything from practical actions such as planting pollinator friendly plants to letter writing workshops, festivals to football matches, seaweed foraging to school assemblies.

Organised by The Climate Coalition - a group of over 100 organisations, including The Wildlife Trusts - Great Big Green Week will see over 1 million people from communities across the country swapping together for good, to:

1. Protect and restore nature
2. Lessen the impact of climate change
3. Strengthen our communities
4. Demonstrate to politicians that they need to step up and play their part

Oxted marks the occasion with litter picking and making a bug hotel at the library on Saturday.

🌿The UK’s biodiversity is under serious threat. 🌿

If our gardens in Britain were made even a tiny bit wilder, they could do a lot to offer a vital lifeline for wildlife.

Wilder spaces can boost biodiversity, improve water quality, absorb carbon, and even reduce the impacts of climate breakdown such as flooding. And of course, gardens are so precious in helping each of us connect with nature too.

Ways to rewild your garden.
• You could create natural habitats for pollinators like bees, butterflies, and moths, by mowing less or letting the grass grow longer in some areas
• Choose plants that are adapted to the UK’s climate and soil which provide year-round nectar, pollen, seeds and berries.
• Install a pond to attract frogs, newts, birds, insects, and even small mammals.
• Tidy less - log piles, rockeries, dead wood and piles of leaves can provide nesting sites, hibernation spots, and places for insects to thrive.

We believe there is a responsibility of landscape and garden designers to protect the environment. We pride ourselves in always designing with nature and biodiversity in mind.

We choose durable over disposable. Using responsibly sourced materials that last or are reclaimed. The ecosystem is in the forefront of our minds, working with nature to boost biodiversity.

As the UK climate is rapidly changing, it’s important to grow the right plants in the right place. We think about drought tolerant perennials, where there is less need for irrigation and watering. Alternatively, a more flood resistant garden in some areas is considered.

We always consider the wildlife in your garden. Hedgehog highways are a must! Hedgehogs travel up to 2 km every night to find food and mates. With urban areas becoming increasingly blocked off by secure garden fences, these slug eating mammals are losing crucial habitat.

🌿We’ve reached the end of No Mow May! 🌿

On behalf of your wildflowers and pollinators, thank you, to those who were brave enough for breaking with convention and for re-imagining your lawns.

Why not leave a space in your garden for nature to continue to bloom this June, by mowing out paths or designating a specific area to continue to be wild, while mowing others.

However, if you are mowing, please be careful, in case creatures are hiding in the longer grass!

Here are some ideas.

• Use soft, textured plants like lamb's ear or silky grasses.

• Integrate aromatic plants like lavender, rosemary, or jasmine to promote relaxation.

🌿Here at Scott Taylor Garden Design, we are always excited to incorporate clay pavers and setts into our client’s garden designs.🌿

Their versatility and beauty allow us to really get creative with features within the garden and enables us to carve out areas of interest.

Clay Pavers & Setts are multipurpose - they can be used for patios, pathways, drive ways, court yards, walkways and boarders. They are a modern-day twist on paving bricks.

They work well with traditional paving, such as limestone and sandstone and look just as stunning, when contrasted against the smooth finish of porcelain.
