One of those tips that seems obvious once you know it — when cutting holes for downlights, use the actual fitting as your template. Mark the centre, offer it up, trace the edge, and you've got a perfect hole with a nice lip for the light to sit on. No fuss, no measuring twice. Anyone else use this method?

The light fitting came with connection strip in the box — but I binned it and used push-in rail connectors instead. Faster to terminate, neater in the junction box, and no worrying about screws coming loose over time. Do you stick with what comes in the box or swap it out for something better?

Plastered right over the socket box — classic. Before we can second fix anything we have to clean every box out with a multi-tool so the faceplate sits flush. Anyone else spend half their day fixing what other trades left behind?

Job done - floor back down, fuse board properly labelled, everything tested. This is what a finished job should look like, not just 'it works'. Does your consumer unit actually have clear labels on it?

You won't believe the reaction when we switched these on! 🤯 In this 17-minute installation, I'm fitting 9 downlights throughout a property and the customer was absolutely speechless with the result. Watch as I run the cable from the switch, install a connection box, and wire each light in sequence – it's simpler than you'd think but looks premium when it's done right. Before we start any kitchen electrical job, we show the customer an artist's impression of exactly how it'll look when it's done 📋 It sets expectations, builds trust, and means no awkward conversations at the end. Do you take time to walk customers through the plan before starting work? Would love to know how other trades handle this.
