A challenging site shouldn’t limit what your home can become. In many cases, it’s the opportunity.

With this home, the hillside setting was something I wanted the design to embrace rather than fight against.

The existing property already had a fantastic position, but the opportunity was to make much more of it — opening the home towards those views, bringing in more natural light and giving the house a contemporary identity that still felt completely at home in its surroundings.

Larger areas of glazing now allow the homeowners to experience the landscape from inside the house, while the new feature gable and extension give the property a stronger, more modern architectural character.

But one of my favourite parts of the design is how we dealt with the levels.

Rather than treating the change in height from the garage to the entrance as a problem to solve, it became part of the architecture. The new rendered staircase, terraces, landscaping and entrance sequence work with the hillside, creating a much more considered journey into the home.

And that’s really what good design on a difficult site should do.

Not flatten out the challenges — use them to create something better.

The result is a home that feels modern without feeling out of place, makes far more of its incredible setting, and gives an existing property an entirely new lease of life.

If you own a home on a sloping or challenging site, don’t assume the site is holding you back.

It could be the very thing that makes your project special.

Planning permission in the Green Belt isn’t always about accepting “no”. It’s about finding the right route to “yes”.

For this home, we used a carefully considered planning strategy to demonstrate that a beautifully designed transformation could have less impact than what could otherwise be built through permitted development rights.

The result? Planning permission achieved — and a home that feels considered, cohesive and sympathetic to its setting, rather than a collection of disconnected additions.

This is what we do at Transform Architects: we don’t just design the outcome. We work out the route to achieving it.

If you’re looking at your own home and wondering “Could we actually get permission for this?” — speak to us before assuming the answer is no.

TWO ERAS. ONE HOME

How do you make a home built in the 1800s work for life in the 2020s — without losing what made it special?

That was the real challenge here.

This wasn't simply a renovation with a modern extension added to the back. We had to bring together two completely different eras of construction and make the finished home look, feel and function as one.

The original property needed to retain its period character. The new extension needed to provide the space, light and connection to the garden the homeowners wanted. And throughout both, we needed to create a home designed around wheelchair accessibility and independence, including a lift connecting the different levels.

Then there’s another challenge homeowners often don't see. Older properties behave very differently from modern buildings.

We used external insulation and render to improve the performance of the existing house, while carefully recreating its period features. We designed the contemporary extension to complement the original building rather than compete with it. We coordinated the accessibility, levels, circulation, lift, old structure, and new construction as one complete architectural solution.

Because good design isn't about solving one problem beautifully.

It's about solving dozens of problems so well that the homeowner doesn't notice any of them.

What they experience instead is a warm, accessible, characterful home that flows naturally from old to new and works around the way they want to live.

That's the value of having Transform Architects involved.

We take care of the complexity, so your home doesn't feel complicated.

What if building your dream home didn’t have to become your second job?

When this family came to me, they weren’t simply looking for a new house.

They wanted a home designed specifically around how their family wanted to live — and they wanted someone they trusted to take responsibility for managing the journey from idea to reality.

That’s the real value of a bespoke, fully managed build.

You get to make the exciting decisions about your future home, without having to spend your evenings coordinating consultants, chasing answers, worrying whether things have been missed or trying to figure out what needs to happen next.

My role as your architect is to see the bigger picture, guide the decisions and manage the moving parts — while keeping the home we set out to create at the centre of everything.

The result?

A home that feels considered rather than compromised.

A home designed around your family, your lifestyle and your future.

And a building process where you can feel confident that someone is looking after the details on your behalf.

Because ultimately, you don't want to become an expert in building houses.

You just want to end up living in the right one.

25% more usable space. In the Green Belt. With planning permission secured. 🏡🌿

But this project was never just about making the house bigger.

At Transform Architects, we completely rethought this home to create a disability-accessible, future-proof home designed for life.

The challenge was to unlock the additional space our clients needed while keeping the impact on the Green Belt to a minimum.

Through a carefully designed home extension and full house refurbishment, we created around 25% more usable floor space, improved accessibility throughout and designed the architecture to sit naturally within its semi-rural setting.

Because what we do at Transform Architects isn't simply about adding space.

We transform homes around the people who live in them — now and for the future.

That's exactly what this family was told.

The site was steep. It was overlooked. It needed to be fully wheelchair accessible. More than one person had written it off as impossible.

We saw something different.

Today, that same hillside is home to a beautifully designed, fully accessible house that doesn't feel compromised in any way. It offers independence, privacy and light-filled spaces, while sitting naturally within the landscape rather than fighting against it.

This is why we do what we do.

Architecture isn't about creating impressive drawings. It's about solving problems that change people's lives. It's about giving families the confidence that there is a solution—even when everyone else has said no.

If you've got a difficult plot, a challenging brief, or you've been told your dream home isn't possible...

Don't let one opinion define what's achievable.

Sometimes all it takes is the right team to see the opportunity where others only see obstacles.

What's the biggest obstacle standing between you and your dream home? Let us know below or send us a message. You might be surprised what's actually possible.
