⚠️ WARNING ⚠️

These fan units are appearing all over social media and are being sold by various online sellers. I had seen them advertised before, but today I came across one installed in a customer’s property for the first time.

As an electrician, I have concerns about these products.

A standard bayonet or pendant light fitting is designed to support a lamp (bulb) and, where applicable, a lightweight lampshade up to a specified weight. It is not designed to support a motorised fan that creates vibration, movement and twisting forces during operation.

The constant movement can place additional strain on the pendant flex, lampholder and ceiling rose, potentially leading to damage over time. The fitting can wobble, twist and swing while the fan is running, which is not what these fittings were originally designed for.

If you’re considering one of these, please think carefully before purchasing. A proper ceiling fan should be installed on a suitable mounting designed to support the weight and movement of the fan safely.

Just because something screws into a light fitting doesn’t necessarily mean the light fitting was designed to support it.

Another EV charger installation completed this week using a Simpson & Partners charge point finished in black with a tethered lead.

Really pleased with how tidy this one turned out against the brickwork. These chargers not only look great but are packed with smart features too.

Thankfully no one was injured, and all 3 cats were safely rescued too 🐱🚒

A big well done and thank you to Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service Central Station for sharing this important reminder after attending a kitchen fire caused by an electrical fault with a fridge freezer.

The residents were alerted by working smoke alarms 🚨 — proving just how important they are in every home.

⚠️ A few important reminders:

• ✅ Test your smoke and heat alarms regularly
• 📅 Check the date on your alarms
• 🔄 Most alarms should be replaced after 10 years
• 🚪 Close doors if a fire is discovered to help slow the spread of smoke and flames
• ⚡ Many alarms are hard-wired into the mains electricity, so always use a qualified electrician when replacing them
