Kitchen lighting gets left until last - and it shows.

Most kitchens still rely on one central ceiling light doing all the work. Fine for finding the fridge, useless for chopping veg or reading a recipe without shadowing your own hands.

Proper kitchen lighting works in layers:

Task lighting - under-cabinet LEDs over worktops and the hob, so you're not working in your own shadow.

Ambient lighting - the general ceiling light that fills the room.

Accent lighting - inside glass cabinets or over an island, more about atmosphere than function.

Get it planned in before first-fix electrics, not after the units are in. Retrofitting lighting into a finished kitchen usually means chasing cables through units that are already up.

Worth asking early: how many circuits, is it dimmable, and where exactly do the under-cabinet strips sit relative to the socket line.

Worktop material decision paralysis? Here's the honest breakdown before you commit.

Laminate: cheapest option, wipes clean easily, but heat and sharp knives will mark it over time. Fine for a tight budget, not built for heavy daily abuse.

Quartz: the most popular choice we fit now. Non-porous, doesn't stain, handles heat far better than laminate, and holds its colour. Costs more upfront but rarely needs replacing.

Granite: natural stone, every slab genuinely unique, but needs sealing periodically or it can stain. Ask your fitter how often before you buy.

Solid wood: looks fantastic on day one, but needs real maintenance (oiling, care around water at the sink) or it warps and marks faster than people expect.

Whatever you pick, get the thickness and edge profile confirmed in writing before ordering. It affects both the look and how it's fitted around your hob and sink.

Want a new kitchen fitted in time for Christmas? Late August is when you need to start, not November.

Design and measure-up usually takes 1-2 weeks. Units and worktops then need ordering with the supplier, and that lead time alone can run 4-8 weeks depending on the range. Add the actual fit on top (anywhere from a few days to 2-3 weeks depending on scope), and a job started in November is already cutting it fine once you factor in supplier delays over the festive period.

Starting the conversation now means your units arrive in good time, your fit gets booked into the diary before it fills up, and you're not eating Christmas dinner in a half-finished kitchen.

Not sure whether your kitchen needs an island, a galley layout, or an L-shape? A few honest pointers before you start picking units.

Short on floor space? A single run or galley layout usually beats forcing an island in — you lose the walking room instead of gaining worktop.

An island only earns its keep if you've got proper clearance on all sides once it's in — anything tighter and it becomes an obstacle, not a feature.

Corner units are where a lot of usable storage gets wasted if they're not planned properly — worth asking your fitter how they're handling the corners before you agree a design.

Where the sink and hob sit relative to your fridge and prep space matters more for day-to-day usability than how the kitchen looks in a render.

Kitchen fitting date booked in? A few practical things worth sorting before the team arrives — they make the whole week run a lot smoother.

Clear access from your front door to the kitchen — hallways get busy with units, tools and materials.
Set up a temporary kitchen elsewhere in the house — kettle, microwave, mini fridge — if you'll be without one for a few days.
Tell us about anything hidden early — old pipework, uneven floors, a tired fuse box — the sooner we know, the fewer surprises mid-job.
Keep pets and children clear of the work area while tools and materials are out.
Sort parking for the day — vans and skips need somewhere to sit.

None of it is complicated, but it's the difference between a fitting week that runs smoothly and one that doesn't.
