What separates a well planned project from a successful one? Often, it's the experience behind the decisions being made.

We recently sat down with Jim Cooper to discuss his journey through the construction industry and how three decades of experience across site operations, project delivery and technical estimating continue to shape the way he approaches projects today.

From identifying potential risks early to developing practical solutions before work begins, Jim shares why understanding how projects are delivered in the real world is just as important as understanding how they are designed on paper.

Watch the video below to hear more about Jim's career, industry insights and the lessons he's learned along the way.

We're pleased to welcome Chris Walker to the TSM team as our new Works Manager.

Chris brings 12 years of industry experience across clean water, wastewater and civil engineering projects, with a strong background in concrete repairs, waterproofing, drainage, membranes and protective coatings.

What makes Chris's journey particularly valuable is that he's worked his way through the industry from operative to supervisor, site foreman and now works manager. Having gained hands on experience at every level, he understands what it takes to deliver projects safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

As we continue to grow our dedicated water division, Chris's experience in both clean and wastewater infrastructure will further strengthen our ability to deliver specialist maintenance and refurbishment projects across the sector.

Welcome to the team, Chris. We're looking forward to having you on board and seeing the impact you'll make!

Congratulations to our team member Ethan Moult, who recently secured a Silver medal in the Men's Points Fighting category at the PKA Kickboxing Interclub Tournament hosted by KickboxUK in Nottingham. 🥈

The tournament brought together clubs and fighters from across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, making this a fantastic achievement.

After attending a karate training session earlier that morning, he went straight into the competition, demonstrating discipline, focus and adaptability throughout the day.

The dedication and commitment required in sport reflect the same qualities we value at TSM - perseverance, preparation and striving for excellence.

Well done on a brilliant achievement and a hard earned silver medal!

Strong teams are built through trust, communication and shared standards, both on site and behind the scenes.

We recently sat down with Suzanne Saynor to discuss her experience within TSM, from the collaborative culture at our Nottingham HQ to the teamwork that supports delivery across live project environments.

In an industry where coordination and consistency are critical, creating an environment where people work closely together has a direct impact on how projects are delivered.

Take a look at her insights and experiences within the business:

One of the biggest differences in how infrastructure projects are delivered often comes down to accountability.

In many parts of the industry, projects pass through multiple layers before work even reaches the people carrying it out. Main contractors, subcontractors and external suppliers can all sit between the original requirement and the team on site.

TSM operates differently.

Our work is self delivered, which means the same business managing the project is also responsible for delivering it. That creates clearer communication, greater control over quality and safety and faster decision making when challenges arise on site.

For clients, it means fewer disconnects, stronger accountability and confidence that the people delivering the work fully understand the responsibility that comes with it.

Most infrastructure problems don’t start with dramatic visible failures.

They usually begin quietly with small cracks, water ingress, early corrosion, or
subtle movement that worsens over time if left unmonitored.

Identifying issues early allows informed decisions to be made before defects develop into larger operational, safety or commercial issues.

That’s why concrete condition surveys are such an important part of long-term asset management, and for our team, surveys go beyond identifying damage.

They help provide clarity around risk, repair priorities and the most effective approach to protecting the lifespan of critical infrastructure.

Using techniques such as covermeter surveys, hammer testing, chlorination testing and traffic light reporting, we help clients build a clearer understanding of structural condition, risk areas, repair priorities and the most effective route for remediation.

The earlier issues are identified, the greater the opportunity to reduce disruption, control costs and protect long-term performance of critical infrastructure.

Summer often changes the pace of infrastructure maintenance.

Longer daylight hours and more stable conditions allow larger programmes of work to move forward across multiple sectors at once.

While much of TSM’s work sits within the water industry, the team also delivers specialist installations such as structural concrete repairs, cathodic protection, carbon fibre strengthening and resin flooring to name a few.

Different applications, different conditions, but the same responsibility to deliver work safely and effectively.

That consistency comes from maintaining direct control over the process.

From planning and logistics through to delivery on site, the work stays within one team, allowing quicker decision making, clearer communication and tighter quality control throughout the project lifecycle.

In busy operational periods, that level of control becomes even more important.

During periods of extreme temperatures, our teams have to adapt the way work is planned, managed and delivered.

Heat affects more on site than people realise.

Material performance can change. Working conditions become more demanding.

Fatigue and dehydration risks increase. Even small operational decisions start to carry greater importance.

That’s why preparation matters.

On high responsibility sites, managing work safely in hot conditions isn’t reactive. It comes down to planning ahead, monitoring teams properly, adjusting workloads where needed and maintaining the standards expected on every project regardless of conditions.

Experienced teams understand that environmental factors are part of the job. The challenge is maintaining the same level of control, safety and quality while working through them.

Recognising the people who contribute to the success of our projects is an important part of life at TSM.

This month, we're recognising Scott Turner as our first ever Employee of the Month following his progression into a Site Agent role.

This past month, Scott has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing his knowledge and embracing the challenges that come with managing projects and teams on site.

Several colleagues nominated Scott for the way he has approached his transition into management, consistently applying what he has learned, asking the right questions and leading by example.

Progression like this reflects the importance of continuous development within our business and highlights the opportunities available for those willing to learn, adapt and take responsibility.

Scott has also decided that he is donating his prize to our Tough Mudder prostate cancer fundraising effort.

Congratulations, Scott, on a well-deserved achievement.
