Can a tree with root rot be saved? Sometimes. It comes down to how much of the root plate has gone. Check the base for fungus. Is the soil lifting or cracking on one side? Has it started leaning when it never used to? Watch for that. Plenty of trees round here sit on sandstone with shallow roots anyway, so once the root plate's damaged there's not much margin left when the October and November gales come through. Don't wait for it to fall on its own. Give Nottingham Tree Surgeons a call. We'll come out, have a proper look at the roots and tell you straight if it can stay or has to come down. Inspection's free. No obligation.

Tree come down in the wind? Don't start cutting it up yourself. A fallen trunk is often still under tension. Make the wrong cut and it can spring back at you, or roll. The autumn gales are due through October and November. Trees on shallow root plates over Nottingham's sandstone lift first. At Nottingham Tree Surgeons we'll make the tree safe and clear the site. The brash gets chipped. Want the timber for firewood? We can cut it into 30 cm sections. If the tree's protected we check that before any work starts. Worried about one? Give us a shout and we'll come and have a look. Free, no obligation.

Can a tree right next to your house or a power line come down safely? Yes. Just rarely in one go. Normally we take it apart from the top, piece by piece, and lower each section on ropes so nothing drops onto a roof or a wire. If it's near power lines, please don't touch it yourself. We've been at Nottingham Tree Surgeons 20 years now. The planning always takes longer than the cutting. Round Nottingham it's a lot of sandstone, so the root plate tends to be shallow and a lean can be worse than it looks. We work to strict safety protocols and we're fully insured for liability. Got one worrying you before the autumn gales? Give us a shout for a free inspection.

Will crown reduction harm my mature tree? Not if it's done right. We cut the outer canopy back to healthy growth points. The tree recovers well and keeps its natural shape. Thinning's a different job. We take out selected inner branches so light and wind can get through, which helps limes and beeches ride out the October and November gales. Lots of mature trees in Mapperley Park and West Bridgford have TPOs on them. We check that before we start anything. Nottingham Tree Surgeons has been at this over 20 years. Not sure what your tree needs? Give us a shout for a free inspection.

Need the stump out after a tree's come down? Not always. But if you want to replant or lay turf, grinding's the tidiest job. Same if you're sick of tripping over it. We grind it down below ground level. Chippings can go back on the garden as mulch, or we recycle them. Lots of gardens round here sit on sandstone and the root plates are fairly shallow, so we always check what's underneath first. Had a tree down and the stump's still there? Get Nottingham Tree Surgeons out to have a look. Free inspection, no obligation.

"How much to take my tree down?" Honestly, I can't tell you till I've seen it. Anyone quoting blind is guessing. Size matters. So does species. Access is the big one, though. Picture a beech tucked behind a house in Mapperley Park with no side gate. That's a totally different day's work to one sat in an open front garden. Then is it protected? Do you want it chipped, or cut into 30 cm firewood logs? Stump out as well, or left in? That's why at Nottingham Tree Surgeons the inspection's free with no obligation, and you only pay once the job's done as agreed. Happy to come and have a look.

A tree needs to come down if it's dead or dying. Same if it's structurally unsound, or genuinely too close to the house. Dropping leaves? Not a reason on its own. October and November bring the autumn gales, so get out there now and have a look. Fungi at the base is a warning sign. So are deep cracks or a sudden lean. Before we fell anything we check for a TPO or a conservation area. Fines go up to £20,000. Then it comes down under strict safety procedures. Want the wood for firewood? We'll cut it into 30 cm logs for you. Not sure about a tree? Nottingham Tree Surgeons will come and inspect it free, no obligation, anywhere in Nottingham.

Yes, we can clear a plot with several trees. First job is checking what's protected though. The city has over 10,000 protected trees. Conservation areas like Wollaton and Sherwood need extra care, and fines go up to £20,000. So we check before anything gets cut.

Once that's sorted we fell in a safe order. Stumps get ground out. Brash goes through the chipper. Want firewood? We'll cut the timber into 30 cm sections for you. Whatever's left gets recycled or repurposed.

Nesting season's done now. Autumn's a good window for it.

Nottingham Tree Surgeons will walk the plot with you first. The inspection's free and there's no obligation.

"Should I get my trees looked at before the autumn gales?" Yes. Now's the time.

Late September into October is when the first proper winds arrive. That's when weak limbs and dead wood come down. Around The Park and Mapperley Park especially, you've got mature limes and horse chestnuts sitting on shallow root plates over sandstone. A crown thin before the worst of it makes a real difference.

Hedge work's fine again now nesting season's over.

Something looking dodgy? Want a second opinion? Nottingham Tree Surgeons will pop out anywhere in Nottingham for a free, no-obligation look.

Ash dieback. Here's what to look for. The crown starts thinning out. Leaves wilt and go black in mid-summer. You'll also see dark diamond-shaped lesions where the branches join the trunk.

It's been bad round the Sherwood Forest fringe. Got ash in your Nottingham garden? Check it.

Infected wood turns brittle. Dead limbs can come down with no warning, and October gales make it a lot worse. That doesn't mean every affected tree has to be felled. Some are under TPOs too, so find that out before anyone picks up a saw.

We've been at this over 20 years at Nottingham Tree Surgeons. Not sure what you've got? We'll come out and take a look. Free inspection, no obligation.
