Did drought or heat have greater effect on crop yields this harvest?

This summer’s prolonged period of low rainfall and repeated heatwaves have seen cereal yields struck down as stressed crops senesced rapidly.

Drought is often viewed as the primary limitation to cereal production during late spring and early summer, but heat stress can, in fact, be more damaging.

While the two stress factors often occur simultaneously, they affect crops in different ways and have different effects on yield.

The key distinction is that drought primarily limits crop function, whereas heat can permanently damage reproductive development.

Research helping farmers grow food in saltier soil

Scientists researching how to protect crops from increasing soil salinity have said their latest findings will support future food security.

The study, by the University of Lincoln, is looking at how farmers can continue to grow food in soil that is saltier due to climate change.

Prof Matthew Goddard, who is leading the study, said research has shown that naturally occurring soil microbes can be "trained" to better tolerate saltier conditions.

Farmers across Gloucestershire have shared how the hot and dry weather has been impacting their livelihoods.

As drought has been declared across more than half of England, the BBC is shining a spotlight on farming as part of its Farmwatch series.

Farmers have said the lack of grass during the hot weather is making it harder to feed livestock, and dairy farmers are having to deal with hot and bothered cows producing less milk.

Farmers report less milk, lower crop yields and challenges over feeding livestock.

Oakham Pest Control Limited Renews British Mole Catchers Register Membership

We’re pleased to confirm that Oakham Pest Control Ltd has renewed its membership of the British Mole Catchers Register (BMCR).

But what exactly is the British Mole Catchers Register?

The BMCR is a UK register dedicated to traditional mole catching, helping members of the public find registered mole catchers in their area. The organisation has operated its digital register since 2007 and promotes traditional mole catching across the UK.

For us, renewing our membership is about continuing to support professional, responsible and traditional mole management.

Mole catching is a specialist skill. Understanding mole behaviour, identifying active tunnel systems and correctly positioning traps all play an important part in achieving effective control.

Being part of the BMCR also gives members access to industry support and advice, while helping customers identify specialist mole catchers operating in their area.
