Timber! at Moors Valley

Moors Valley first opened in 1988 as a joint venture between Dorset Council and Forestry England, covering a unique habitat mosaic of woodland, lakes and extensive recreational parkland.

Across three phases, we worked closely with Forestry England to weave our thinking into their celebrated play trail. Each structure carefully connects with the surrounding woodland in their own way, tapping into Moors Valley distinct approach and sensitively bringing the story of the forest to life through play.

Timber! brings the story of a managed forest and the harvesting process to life. The concept focuses on the people and processes behind managing the woodland, letting children immerse themselves in imaginative play and creating their own version of a day in the life of a Forestry England forester.

Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens has been a firm family favourite for over fifty years. Set in more than 160 acres of parkland and ancient woodland near Burford, the Park is home to a remarkable collection of rare and exotic animals, from rhinos and lemurs to leopards and giraffes, housed within a naturalistic, landscape-led setting.

The original Skymaze, designed and built by CAP.CO in 2014, became known for its endless routes woven amongst the tree canopies. Across twelve years of heavy, joyful use it earned its place as one of the Park’s best-loved attractions, that same popularity meant it was time to rebuild.

We were tasked with the rare privilege of redesigning something we’d already built. We wanted to keep the spirit and layout that families already loved, but rework it with modern materials and an upgraded design to endure more years of heavy use.

That thinking shaped a taller, more connected structure rising through three levels of interconnected treehouses, linked by a network of wooden walkways, rope bridges, crawl tunnels and slides. Organised around a vertical journey, allowing children to enter at ground level and choose their own route upwards and returning to the forest floor via a series of slides.

It’s deliberately intuitive with no fixed path or prescribed outcome, just the freedom to explore. At its highest point, the Skymaze opens out onto a viewing platform close to eight metres above the ground, offering a moment of pause and perspective back over the wider Park.

The reimagined Skymaze opened earlier this year and is open daily from 10am

We've written a piece for Museums and Heritage Advisor that looks at what roles and responsibilities museums, adventure play and parents share https://bit.ly/4gnFDcs

It starts like this.

There’s a strange kind of immortality in the mundanity of the everyday things we do. The way you hold a door open, the patience you show when something breaks, the questions you ask when you don’t understand something. None of it dies with you. It gets copied, quietly, into the next generation. Your children will probably parent the way you parented, at least in part, whether either of you intended it or not. Skills, habits, manners, curiosity itself are all inherited far more often than they are taught.

Play works the same way.

The Wonky Wood

A treehouse the children can grow into rather than out of…

Tucked behind a working farmhouse, within a small stand of mature trees the family has always known simply as “the Spinney,” a quiet corner of the estate has been transformed into a bespoke woodland adventure playground. Enclosed by a ring of tall, established trees casting natural shade and shelter.

Our brief was to design a play space that made the very most of this setting, one with enough scale and challenge to grow with the family’s children, letting younger ones start gently and build confidence toward more adventurous play as they grow, while feeling entirely at home among the trees.

At the heart of the design sits a layered, turreted treehouse, raised on stilts and finished with a hand-shingled “witch’s hat” roof. A 2.5m stainless steel tube slide bursts from its base, while inside, children find a run of more discreet routes: a secret rope ladder to a low crawl tunnel, an internal ladder to a small loft nook, and a dormer window fitted with a pulley and bucket for hauling treasure up from the ground below.

The Wonky Wood was completed earlier this summer. Respecting the family’s privacy we’re only sharing Alexandra Egan concept sketch for the project.

Welcome to Guildenacre
Final stop: Ember’s Den 🔥

Designed and built in-house by CAP.CO, Guildenacre is a narrative-led adventure play attraction woven through four acres of ancient woodland at Helmingham Hall Estate, Suffolk.

At the heart of the experience is a story-driven journey where children discover four guardian animals who protect the forest alongside the magical Whispering Oak Tree. Subtle references to Helmingham’s heritage, including a flying Pegasus inspired by the family coat of arms, are hidden throughout the site.

Ember’s Den is the fourth and final stop on the journey, watched over by Vex the Vixen. The area combines physical challenge with imaginative discovery, centred around Vex’s den towers. At ground level, play trails and balance beams encourage children to test their agility through multiple routes. Two zip lines boarder the area with options for both older and younger children.

Sensitively woven into the ancient woodland, Guildenacre is a place where adventure, imagination and nature come together.

Atlas’s Elderglade is the third stop on the journey. Inspired by the stag, this is the largest and most physically challenging play zone at Guildenacre. Multiple levels of elevated walkways, bridges and climbing frames invite children to test their balance, strength and courage. Racing slides offer fast descents back to the forest floor, while tunnels, ladders and net features create a network of routes to explore and discover.

Inspired by the owl, this elevated play zone invites children to climb cargo nets, cross high-level walkways, crawl tunnels and explore platforms nestled among the treetops. Talking tubes let young explorers send secret messages across the canopy, while a dedicated stargazing deck with a wildlife telescope encourages quiet moments of discovery, birdwatching and imagination under the leaves.

: At CAP.CO we believe carefully designed outdoor spaces can transform schools and enrich the lives of the children who learn there…

Play embodies so much more than just a recreation, it’s a driving force in what makes us human. In a radically changing world, we must shift our thinking towards more adaptive spaces that are used beyond break time.

✨ A brand new family day out that’s well worth the trip to Suffolk! 🌿 AD

We had such a brilliant day exploring Guildenacre at Helmingham Estate and honestly, it felt so different to your average play area.

The whole space has been beautifully designed around nature, with woodland trails, trees weaving through the play areas and wildlife all around. It has such a calm, relaxed feel while still giving children plenty of opportunities to climb, explore, slide and let their imaginations run wild.

The play is split across four themed areas, each inspired by a different woodland animal, so there’s always something new to discover. From huge climbing structures and tunnels to zip lines, our girls didn’t stop all day.

And can we talk about the food… 👏 If you’re spending the day somewhere, you want more than just the usual pre packaged snacks and they’ve absolutely nailed it. serves tasty, freshly prepared food and whatever you do… don’t leave without trying a doughnut. Trust us. 😍

It really is one of those places where everyone enjoys the day - not just the children.
