High winds during El Niño could be deadly for England’s stressed trees, say experts

High winds associated with El Niño could cause widespread mortality among tree species already weakened by a prolonged period of extreme heat and drought, experts have warned.

This summer much of Europe has been scorched by a series of record-breaking climate crisis-induced heatwaves. The impact is notable across much of England’s countryside, where once green land has turned brown, and many trees are undergoing “early autumn” – wilting and losing their leaves early – to cope with extreme heat.

Kevin Martin, head of tree collections at Kew Gardens, said to cope with these extreme conditions, trees had not grown as they normally would, and had become less flexible and more brittle.

🌳 Identify trees that need to be removed or pruned to accommodate the development

🌳 Assess the impact on the remaining trees, considering factors such as changes in soil levels, proximity of construction, and potential damage to root systems

🌳 Recommend actions for the protection and management of trees during the construction phase

Autumn is one of the most important times to prepare your garden for future dry summers. RHS Chief Horticulturist Guy Barter shares his tips on what you can do now to give your garden a head start for next year:

🌱 Plant deciduous trees from mid-October while the soil is still warm. If you're replacing plants damaged by drought, it's also a good time to rethink your planting choices for a changing climate.

🌱 Get trees, shrubs and perennials in the ground now so they can establish strong root systems before next summer's heat and dry conditions.

🌱 Most seeds sown now will wait until spring to grow, but lawns are the exception. Reseed or returf while there's still enough warmth and moisture for grass to establish.

🌱 Manure can improve soil structure and water-holding capacity, whilst mulching helps reduce water loss and suppress weeds. Avoid unnecessary digging to help conserve moisture.

🌱 Prepare your garden for potential water shortages next summer. Plant woody plants and hardy perennials now, choose varieties with lower water needs such as cannas, osteospermums and pelargoniums, and space crops more widely.
