π₯ IMPORTANT GAS SAFETY UPDATE β FROM 1 OCTOBER 2026 π₯
There are new requirements for tightness testing of gas installations coming into effect across the UK.
From 1 October 2026, the new IGEM/UP/1B Edition 4 standard comes into effect. This sets out the procedures for tightness testing and purging of small domestic and commercial natural gas and LPG installations.
π οΈ What does this mean for homeowners?
If we carry out work that could affect the gas-tightness of your installation, the gas installation may need to be tightness tested.
This can include work such as:
β’ Installing or replacing a gas appliance
β’ Altering or extending gas pipework
β’ Replacing sections of gas pipework
β’ Disconnecting/reconnecting sections of an installation
β’ Work where the installation has lost its gas pressure
β’ Certain remedial or alteration works to existing pipework
The new standard specifically covers tightness testing before and after work that may affect the gas tightness of an existing installation.
π What is a tightness test?
A tightness test checks that the gas installation is not leaking and is safe to put back into service.
It isn't simply a case of connecting an appliance and checking that appliance.
Depending on the work being undertaken, the appropriate section of the gas installation will need to be tested in accordance with the relevant procedure.
This may mean that some jobs take a little longer than they previously did, particularly where additional testing or purging is required.
β οΈ Why are these checks important?
Gas safety is something we take extremely seriously.
These requirements are there to ensure that gas installations are left safe, sound and gas-tight following work.
As a Gas Safe Registered engineer, Phoenix Install will be following the current requirements and carrying out the appropriate testing whenever it is required.
So if you notice us carrying out additional testing during your next gas installation, alteration or repair, there is a reason for it.
It is all part of making sure your gas installation is safe before we leave.
