Every new architectural project comes with new research…
While exploring the history of a property I’m working on, I uncovered this stamped brick. It reads “Skiers Spring, Nr Barnsley” and was made at the Skiers Spring Brickworks near Hoyland, South Yorkshire, dating from the late Victorian period.

At first, it seemed an odd find in Norfolk. But the more I learned about the site, the more it made sense.
The house was built around 1890 and was once home to a commercial greenhouse nursery specialising in vine growing. At its peak, the property had numerous glasshouses, complete with boiler houses, heating systems and extensive brick structures. With the railway network connecting manufacturers across Britain, bricks like this could easily have travelled from Yorkshire to Norfolk to become part of the nursery.
It’s a reminder that every old building has layers of history waiting to be uncovered. Sometimes, a single brick can tell the story of Victorian industry, transport and horticulture all at once.

Research like this is one of my favourite parts of working with historic buildings, every discovery adds another piece to the puzzle.

Site visit earlier today to St Simon and St Jude Church, a medieval church in the heart of Norwich.

It was great to be on site ahead of the start of repair works, reviewing the scope of the project and discussing the planned programme of conservation and maintenance works. These historic buildings are an important part of Norwich’s heritage, and we’re pleased to be involved in helping to preserve them for future generations.

Looking forward to seeing the repairs progress over the coming weeks.

While Dracula gave Whitby Abbey a lasting gothic reputation, its real history is even more remarkable. Founded in 657 by St. Hilda, the abbey became one of the most important centres of learning in early medieval England. Hilda was not only a powerful abbess and political figure, but also hosted the famous Synod of Whitby in 664 and nurtured the poet Cædmon. Her successor, St. Ælfflæd, continued that legacy as a respected leader known for her political influence, surgical skill, and compassionate care. Long before Dracula’s shadow fell over Whitby, the abbey was shaping the spiritual, cultural, and intellectual history of Anglo-Saxon England.

On this day in 1897, Dracula was published 🦇

Its roots go back to when Bram Stoker visited Whitby in 1890 and found inspiration in the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey, looming over the harbour, and the eerie beauty of the cliffs and churchyard below.

and honestly… if you stood beneath the ruins of Whitby Abbey in the mist, you’d probably start writing vampire stories too 🧛

Event of the Week - This week I’ve started project project for Redwings Horse Sanctuary here in Norfolk.

Absolutely delighted to be collaborating with such an inspiring new client. Our visit to the sanctuary was truly heartwarming, seeing the incredible work they do up close was something special.

And to top it off, the weather couldn’t have been better.
