Why Landscape Matters

After many years in landscape architecture, I’m still fascinated by how the places around us can influence the way we live, work and connect with our surroundings.

Every project brings something different — from understanding the character of a site to finding creative and practical ways to make a place work better.

That variety is one of the things I enjoy most about what I do. No two landscapes are ever the same, and there is always something new to learn.

Through Change Consulting, I enjoy sharing my experience, ideas and observations, as well as connecting with others who care about creating better places.

The Planting Season Begins – Time to Cultivate Resilient Landscapes!

October through March has traditionally been the prime season for planting, with cooler temperatures and seasonal rainfall providing the conditions for landscapes to take root and thrive.

Yet, with the effects of climate change, these familiar cycles are becoming less predictable.

Warmer winters, unexpected frosts, and irregular rainfall challenge us to rethink our approach to landscape design. Creating sustainable, resilient spaces that can adapt to these shifts is now more essential than ever.

This season, let’s plant with purpose, fostering landscapes that can endure and flourish in a changing climate.

Great Projects Start with Collaboration

One of the things I enjoy most is seeing a project grow from an initial idea into a finished space.

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside architects, landscape professionals, developers and construction teams, bringing different skills and ideas together.

I believe good communication, trust and a shared vision are key to creating successful projects.

Whether I’m involved at the early design stage or supporting a project through to completion, I enjoy being part of the journey and helping turn ideas into spaces that work.

What do you think makes a great project partnership?

Plant of the Month: Sea Holly

Eryngium – e-RING-e-um
E. maritimum – mar-IT-i-mum (native to the UK)
E. bourgatii – boor-GA-te-I (one of the most popular species)

I find Eryngium fascinating. The range of colours, particularly the beautiful blues, is striking, while the unusual form of the flowers – and the plants as a whole – makes them a real feature in the garden.

The genus is widespread, with Eryngium maritimum, native to Great Britain and Ireland, also found around the Mediterranean and across coastal regions of Europe, North Africa, the Caucasus and parts of Western Asia.

Although less showy than some of its relatives, it is remarkable how well it has adapted to its harsh coastal environment. Its deep taproot helps access water, while its spiny leaves deter grazing. Its succulent leaves and stems store water, and the grey-blue foliage helps reduce water loss.

The showier varieties thrive in free-draining, poor and dry soil and need a sunny position, making them ideal for seaside and Mediterranean-style gardens, as well as drought-tolerant borders.

The blues and purples of E. bourgatii and E. × tripartitum work beautifully in planting schemes, or provide a striking contrast alongside yellows and oranges. They also make excellent cut flowers and can be dried for winter arrangements.

A little Eryngium story…

I once made a wedding flower arrangement and had hoped to use Peace Lilies. When I couldn’t find any, I chose something completely different – Eryngium with bright orange Gerbera.

Looking back, the spiky Eryngium and cheerful Gerbera seemed a rather good representation of married life, with all its ups and downs!

Garden Theme: Woodland Garden

A woodland garden can create a calm and natural feel, especially in spaces shaded by mature trees or surrounded by woodland.

I love using delicate planting, natural materials and gentle touches of colour to complement these settings. Ferns, woodland plants, shade-loving perennials and bulbs can work beautifully beneath a tree canopy, bringing seasonal interest and colour.

I wouldn’t necessarily choose substantial timber furniture. For me, this would depend on the character of the garden and what my client wants and needs from the space.

The best woodland gardens work with the existing landscape, creating somewhere that feels natural, relaxed and beautifully connected to its surroundings.

Could a woodland theme work in your garden?

A Different Side of My Career

When I began my career in landscape design, I never imagined that teaching would become such a rewarding part of my journey.

Over the years, I’ve taught community garden design, landscape and planting design, and supported students as they developed their own skills and ideas.

What I enjoy most is seeing someone gain confidence and turn an idea into something they can be proud of.

It’s a side of my career I never expected, but one I’ve really come to value.

Have you ever taken a course that inspired you to try something new? Yes or no?

Who knew landscape design could lead to a Pokémon hunt?

One of the things I enjoy most about being a Chartered Landscape Architect is seeing how people use and interact with the spaces I’ve helped create.

At Still Waters Run Deep in Northwich, the landscape has its very own PokéStop adding a fun little twist to a walk through the area.
