📍 DAY 2 UPDATE

Day 2 saw the team set off from Dortmund at 7.30am, with 964km ahead, finally arriving in Gliwice, Poland, at around 8pm after several major traffic jams in both Germany and Poland.

Despite the delays, the weather was good and progress remained steady. ✅ There was a slight concern when the engine oil warning light came on, but the team topped up at the next service station and are continuing towards the Ukrainian border, ready for the crossing at around 4am on Sunday morning.

🚐 THE JOURNEY CONTINUES! 🇺🇦

The team has now completed over two-thirds of the journey!

The team has completed its first day of travel, passing through England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, with an overnight stop in Bochum, near Dortmund, Germany.

So far, so good! ✅ The journey is underway, and the team is making good progress towards its goal.

🏗️ 12-TONNE GENERATOR REMOVED FROM A 9-STOREY LONDON HOTEL

A major lifting operation has successfully seen a 12-tonne standby generator removed from the roof of a nine-storey hotel in central London.

The operation involved:

🔹 A large mobile crane positioned on the adjacent road
🔹 Specialist lifting and rigging of the generator from the rooftop area
🔹 Carefully coordinated lifting over a constrained city-centre environment
🔹 Controlled lowering of the generator to ground level for removal

With surrounding buildings, the public highway and site access all needing to be carefully managed, planning, coordination and communication between the project team, lifting specialists and site personnel were essential.

A great example of the specialist engineering and coordination required to deliver complex lifting operations in a busy urban environment.

As civil and structural engineers, we often ask ourselves if renovation projects should focus on modernising buildings to suit today’s world or preserving the character of historic construction.

Our answer - it’s not an either/or conversation. It’s a balance.

The satisfaction we get from breathing new life into a building is immense, bringing improved safety, better performance and the durability to last well into the future. BUT thoughtful preservation is equally important.

Historic structures carry craftsmanship, cultural value and engineering ingenuity that deserves to be protected.
