HVO heating oil: what are five years of real-world use actually showing?
A long-running UK project has now reached its fifth anniversary, giving the heating industry useful experience from homes, a school and a church using renewable liquid heating fuel.
Older oil boilers remain in service, engineers are reporting notably clean boiler internals, and the project is helping separate real-world evidence from some of the bigger claims made about HVO.
We look at what has actually been demonstrated, why correct burner conversion and commissioning matter, and what HVO could eventually mean for oil-heated properties in Northern Ireland.

Gas work should only be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
Incorrect or illegal gas work can put people and property at serious risk, including gas leaks, carbon monoxide and unsafe appliance operation.
Always check that the engineer is properly registered and qualified for the work involved.

Gas Safety Week is a good reminder to make sure CO alarms are fitted where required, tested regularly and replaced in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Faulty or poorly maintained gas appliances can produce carbon monoxide, so regular servicing and working alarms both matter.

Annual service on this ACV commercial unit found all the flame-ring retaining screws had worked loose over the year.

If left, the screws could have fallen out, allowing the burner components to move, causing combustion to deteriorate and potentially leading to lockouts or breakdown.

A good example of why regular commercial servicing is about much more than just cleaning the boiler — it can catch developing faults before they become expensive problems.

Annual servicing of this ACV commercial boiler revealed all of the flame-ring retaining screws had worked loose. Left unchecked, they could have fallen out, affecting combustion and potentially causing a breakdown.
