So what actually is the difference between a standard base cylinder lock and a 1 star tested lock? 🔐

Both these cylinders are available from the Big Orange Hardware Store, and there is at least £10 difference in price. But what is so different?

Well, for one thing, the 1-Star British Standard lock has been put through rigorous testing and found to meet a certain standard, to TS007 standard to be exact. You can tell other locks have reached this standard if they have the British Standards Kitemark on them. It means it has passed some tests to show it has resistance to some of the most common break-in methods, including bumping, drilling and picking. That's not to say that a skilled and tooled up locksmith couldn't get past it, but it's proven it has some resistance to those attacks which may stop or deter a burglar.

Crucially though, there isn't much built in snapping protection on either of these cylinders, and that's why you won't find them in stock with LockFort Security Locksmiths.

👀 Ever wondered what makes some locks harder to get past than others? This 3 star locks has a set of high security pins in a dimple keyway, with the extra security of having sliders too, so the lock would have to be picked in two different ways to open it.

Not impossible, but harder than a basic cylinder found on most uPVC doors. Enough to deter or stop many burglary attempts and at least slow down plenty of others.

As a locksmith, I recommend British Standard Kitemarked cylinders, especially the three star ones if your budget can stretch to them. These cylinders come with lots of nifty features to help protect against a range of different attacks, and have gone up against more rigorous testing to earn their 3 star rating. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

I'd love to say when I'm not on a job I'm a man of leisure, but the truth is, being a good locksmith takes lots of practice at your desk. 🗝️

My customer today wanted a lock on their garden gate that could've opened or locked from both sides. This gate unit was way better than the usual tower bolt and padlock combination, allowing for operation similar to front door.

If you needed to escape in a hurry due to a fire, could you find your keys in time? Could you operate the key in a panic?

I hope you never find yourself in that position, but if you are already thinking of getting your locks changed, moving to a thumb turner on the inside can be a great idea, allowing for fast, keyless escape in a hurry.

It's especially useful on doors that don't have letterboxes built in, meaning it's hard for thieves to manipulate through the opening.

🔍 Sometimes it's the smallest parts of the lock that cause the issue.

In this case, a tiny piece of metal had broken off inside the gearbox of this uPVC patio door and all of a sudden that door wouldn't open for love nor money!

I got to the bottom of it though, ID-ing the gearbox and working out just where to make my mark to minimise damage to the door, get it open and fixed.
