Late-night safety check on the A380🌙

Last Friday night we were carrying out detailed tree inspections on mature trees within falling distance of the dual carriageway. Head torches on, hi‑vis at the ready and plenty of caffeine to keep us going.

handled the traffic management so we could work safely while the road was still live, and we also had a couple of ecologists on site, to advise on habitat features in the trees that may need extra consideration 🐭🐦

We rehomed a rather large tree stump at Oldway Mansion in Torquay today for MW Benney Ltd 🌳

This one was from a tree that failed earlier in the year, waiting for its final journey.

We gave it a good clean-up with the air spade to shake off all the soil and stone, then rolled out the tractor and trailer to take it back to our yard for disposal.

A cracking day for Annie and the team up this mature Monterey cypress in Torbay, carefully removing deadwood over a busy footpath 🌲

Great technical climb, great views across the bay, and most importantly a safer route for everyone passing underneath.

Quick question for you this Friday, especially if you're a woodland owner, estate manager, or landowner in Devon or the South West.

How many sweet chestnut trees do you have on your land?

We're asking because the national campaign needs people with access to these trees to check them and report to TreeAlert. Even a report of a healthy tree is valuable, it helps the Forestry Commission build a picture of where blight has and hasn't spread.

If you'd like us to come and take a look at your trees professionally, drop us a DM.

We're offering free initial consultations for woodland estates in Devon this summer.

Something is threatening Devon’s sweet chestnut trees and we need your help.

Sweet Chestnut Blight has now been confirmed in Devon, and parts of South Devon are under legal restrictions. This fungal disease has caused serious damage overseas, and now it’s here.

We’re backing the national campaign, running until November 2026. It’s a project led by Forest Research and the RHS and it needs help from woodland owners, land managers, farmers and walkers across Devon.

All you need to do is check a sweet chestnut tree and report what you find to TreeAlert.

Find out more: treealert.forestresearch.gov.uk

Over the coming weeks, we’ll share what to look for and how to report it.

If you manage woodland, an estate, or a large garden, do you have sweet chestnut trees on your land? Let us know in the comments.

🌱 Keeping young trees happy in this heat 🌤️

Newly planted and young trees need extra TLC in warm, dry weather – their roots are still shallow, so they dry out much faster than established trees.

Here are a few simple tips:

Water deeply, not just a quick sprinkle – aim for a good soak so the moisture reaches 20–30cm down into the soil around the roots.

As a guide, try to give a young tree a couple of buckets’ worth of water over the week during hot, dry spells (little and often is fine as long as it adds up to a good drink).

Water early in the morning or later in the evening to reduce evaporation and make the most of every drop.

Check the soil – if the top few inches are dry and crumbly, it’s time for another drink.

If you’re unsure whether your young trees are getting enough water, we’re always happy to advise on site and tailor watering guidance to your garden.
