In today’s Times, ‘London’s historic sites face ruin as specialist skills dwindle’.

“We are seeing critical gaps in heritage and craft skills and this is naturally imperilling London’s historic buildings,” says Neal Shasore, a Trustee at the Architectural Heritage Fund ... “Over 2026 there is an anticipated £6 billion worth of construction works on pre-1919 buildings in London... Meanwhile, 16 per cent of heritage organisations surveyed within London reported workforce skills gaps, with an additional 31 per cent reporting skills shortages.”

We wanted to run a croud funding page to get enough dosh to repair the cottage years ago but it was not allowed! A considerable amount of damage has occurred due to neglect from the authorities who are paid to protect our hetatage ‘ it should have been repaired four years ago
Il offered to repair the cott but wasn’t allowed even to put a tarp over the roof( i did anyway😉) not much to celebrate in my personal view really as you should see the state of the roof today its tantamount to vandalism ‘ this cott could be in the hands of a community group that wanted to look after the cott but the authorities wouldn’t allow anyone to look after it ‘ ime to finally be allowed to repair the cott (I’ve been looking after the museum run council owned cott for thirty years ‘ this cott has been left far to long and its saddened me seeing my work neglected ‘ and now ther acting like its a success story after years of my trying to allow the community to run the cottage’ the cott holds so many lovely memories to so many of them’ someone in a office somewhere will claim they care no doubt!!!
Not good management of one of our rare welsh assets🤨 this happens fat to often ‘

Vital repairs are coming for this historic cottage

Great to be upgrading the walls of the Welsh crannog centre roundhouse’ that’s built out in llangorse lake
We are using cleft chestnut in a ‘daub-less wattle’ arrangement 😆
The willow I put there 23 years ago when we first built the thing is in need of some love ❤️
We have a ‘state of the art’ steaming arrangement to make the timber more bendy 😉
We shall do a bit now and again when it’s raining I expect as we are actually working on the other side of the same lake re thatching the bird hide’ we also helped build some years ago 🤪 I’ll pop some details about the hide here soon 😊

After a couple of years gap Dafydd and I will be back again at ty mawr lime home farm this summer
sutch a lovely family and just the best venue ever on the shores of llangorse lake up in the Brecon Beacons national park 🥰 power point introduction first thing in the morning and the rest of the day hands on’ se vid’
Welsh vernacular thatching is along with Irish and Scottish traditional thatching on the Heritage Crafts Association red list’ this list is for crafts at risk of disappearing’ crafts endangered and at risk of of disappearing all-together !
Modern thatching is really great however very different from the traditional and sustainable methods and materials people used for thousands of years’ this is something close to my heart and needs and is gaining recognition and will of course be on the curriculum’ it’s an introduction mind we won’t make thatchers out of you in a day 😉 😆

Been up to Seasonal Reed cutting again 😉
44 years ago I started 🥰😆
This and processing the Reed has been filmed and when we use it on a roof we have planned’ that will be recorded as well’ should be an interesting little film about how it’s all done ☺️
