Drop your thermostat to 19°C, but leave your TRVs set to 5? Or turn the boiler up to 35°C to "heat the house faster"?

October is the month everyone starts tweaking their radiator valves, but a few common habits actually drive energy bills straight through the roof:

❌ Mistake 1: Turning the boiler flow temperature up to max.

(It doesn't heat your home any faster -it just stops modern condensing boilers from running efficiently!)

❌ Mistake 2: Cranking TRVs to "5" to warm up a room quickly.

(The number on a thermostatic radiator valve is a room temperature target, not a speed dial!)

❌ Mistake 3: Heating empty rooms with the doors wide open.

Engineer's Advice: Set your TRVs to 3 (around 18-20°C) in main living spaces, keep interior doors closed, and let the system run smoothly at lower flow temperatures.

Are some of your radiators scalding hot while others stay lukewarm?

When a central heating system turns on, water naturally takes the path of least resistance. This means radiators closest to the boiler heat up fast, while those further away (like upstairs or end of the line rooms) get left behind.

Should all radiators heat up at the same speed?

Ideally, YES! A well installed system should deliver heat evenly across the whole property.

To achieve this, the system needs Balancing.

By finetuning the lockshield valve on every radiator, we control the flow of hot water so each radiator reaches its operating temperature at the same time.

Why does this matter?

Comfort: No more cold bedrooms or overheating living rooms.

Efficiency: Allows modern condensing boilers and heat pumps to operate at lower, high efficiency flow temperatures.

Lower Bills: Stops your boiler working overtime just to reach distant rooms.
